New Delhi: NTPC Vindhyachal has dispatched its first rake of pond ash by rail under a dedicated contract with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for use in Varanasi. The milestone marks a step towards sustainable ash utilisation and more environmentally responsible logistics in support of infrastructure development.
Kishore Kumar Hota, Executive Director of NTPC Vindhyachal, flagged off the first rake from Krishnashila siding on Monday. The consignment will be transported to the NHAI project site in Varanasi through Indian Railways under the rail-cum-road (RCR) mode.
M Suresh, General Manager (Operation and Maintenance), and NK Singh, General Manager (Maintenance and Administration), were present at the flag-off ceremony, along with other senior officials of the station.
NTPC Vindhyachal Adopts Rail-Cum-Road Mode for Pond Ash Transport
Under the RCR arrangement, pond ash is transported primarily by rail and then by road to the designated project site. The integrated transportation system is intended to facilitate the efficient and sustainable delivery of ash for infrastructure-related applications.
The key expected benefits of the initiative include:
- Large-Scale Ash Utilisation: Promoting the productive use of pond ash in infrastructure development.
- Reduced Road Transport: Lowering dependence on road transportation by shifting a significant portion of the journey to rail.
- Lower Fuel Consumption: Improving transportation efficiency through the combined use of rail and road.
- Reduced Carbon Emissions: Minimising emissions associated with the movement of pond ash.
- Sustainable Logistics: Supporting environmentally responsible transportation and resource utilisation.
The initiative is expected to improve logistics efficiency while supporting the wider use of industrial by-products in infrastructure projects.
