Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav has announced 10 hours of daytime electricity for farmers for irrigation, along with plans to bring Narmada water to the Satna belt through canals.

Addressing the Balram Krishi Mahotsav in Satna virtually from Ujjain on September 19, the Chief Minister said the state government is working to make farming more profitable by expanding irrigation, promoting modern and organic agriculture, improving livestock-based income and encouraging crop diversification.

Narmada Water to Expand Irrigation in Satna

The government plans to bring Narmada water to the Satna belt through canals to increase the area under irrigation.

CM Yadav also said work would be taken forward to bring water to the Mandakini River through the Ken-Betwa Link Project. The measures are aimed at expanding irrigation facilities and supporting higher agricultural production in the region.

The Chief Minister highlighted Satna’s potential for turmeric cultivation and said farmers would also be encouraged to take up spice crops. Crop diversification could provide farmers with additional income opportunities beyond traditional crops.

Focus on Modern and Organic Farming

The state government is also planning measures to improve farm productivity through better inputs and modern agricultural practices.

Yadav said farmers would receive improved seeds, while modern and organic farming would be promoted. The government will also encourage natural farming and other agricultural practices that can help farmers explore different production models.

He further said that procurement of paddy produced by farmers in the state would be ensured through government channels.

Livestock and Dairy to Support Farm Incomes

The Chief Minister also called for greater integration of agriculture with animal husbandry and dairy activities.

During his interaction with progressive farmers, Yadav spoke to Shantinayaran Pandey from Sohawal village in Satna. Pandey explained the establishment and operation of his milk processing unit.

Yadav appreciated his efforts and encouraged other farmers to explore dairy and livestock activities alongside agriculture. The approach is aimed at creating additional income sources for farm households.

Progressive Farmers Share Their Experience

Yadav also interacted with progressive farmer Anil Upadhyay from Jhiri Majhgaon, who is working in the field of organic farming.

The Chief Minister encouraged him and called for more farmers to adopt organic and natural farming practices.

The interactions at the Balram Krishi Mahotsav highlighted how farming can be combined with dairy, livestock and other allied activities to diversify rural incomes.

Farmers Get Information on Modern Techniques

The Satna agriculture festival also brought together agricultural scientists and officials to provide farmers with information on government schemes and technical practices.

Experts from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Majhgawan, along with officials from relevant departments, provided information covering agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, agricultural engineering and cooperative activities.

Farmers also received literature on modern farming techniques, improved agricultural practices and government schemes.

The event encouraged farmers to look beyond crop cultivation and consider allied sectors such as horticulture, livestock and fisheries for additional livelihood opportunities.

Irrigation and Diversification at the Core

The announcements place irrigation expansion and reliable electricity supply at the centre of the state’s agricultural strategy.

For farmers, longer daytime power availability can make irrigation operations more convenient, while planned canal connectivity from the Narmada could expand the area that receives irrigation in the Satna region.

At the same time, the push for turmeric, spice crops, organic farming, dairy and other allied activities is aimed at giving farmers more options to diversify their income.

The combined focus on irrigation, electricity, crop diversification and allied activities is expected to shape the state’s approach towards making agriculture more productive and economically sustainable.
