NHPC Signs 40-Year Power Deal with Tripura for 1,720 MW Kamala Hydro Project to Boost Clean Energy Supply

Agartala: NHPC Limited, India’s leading hydropower company, has signed a 40-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL) for the supply of power from its upcoming 1,720 MW Kamala Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh.

The agreement was signed on July 10, 2026, in Agartala and marks a major step towards strengthening clean energy cooperation between NHPC and Tripura. The PPA will come into effect from the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of the project and will remain valid for four decades.

NHPC and Tripura Sign Long-Term Clean Energy Agreement

The newly signed PPA will enable Tripura to procure reliable and sustainable hydroelectric power from the Kamala Hydro Electric Project.

The agreement is expected to strengthen the state’s long-term energy security by ensuring a stable supply of renewable electricity while supporting India’s clean energy transition goals.

NHPC CMD Highlights Role of Hydropower in Clean Energy Transition

NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Mr. Bhupender Gupta said that the signing of the long-term PPA is an important milestone in the company’s commitment towards expanding India’s clean energy capacity.

He highlighted that the partnership will help strengthen energy security while supporting the country’s renewable energy objectives through reliable and sustainable hydropower generation.

PPA Signed During Destination Tripura: Business Conclave 2026

The Power Purchase Agreement was signed during the “Destination Tripura: Business Conclave 2026” organized by the Government of Tripura.

The agreement was signed by:

  • Mr. Ranjeet Thakur, General Manager (Commercial), NHPC
  • Ms. Sujata Sarkar, Deputy General Manager (Commercial), TSECL

The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials, including:

  • Mr. Abhisek Singh, IAS, Secretary, Department of Power, Government of Tripura
  • Mr. Biswajit Basu, Managing Director, TSECL
  • Senior officials from NHPC and TSECL

Kamala Hydro Project to Boost Renewable Energy Capacity

The 1,720 MW Kamala Hydro Electric Project is among the major upcoming hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh.

Once operational, the project is expected to make a significant contribution to India’s renewable energy capacity and help meet the growing electricity demand in the northeastern region.

The project will support:

  • Increased clean energy generation
  • Improved regional power availability
  • Reduced dependence on conventional energy sources
  • Progress towards sustainable development goals

Agreement to Strengthen Tripura’s Power Security

Officials stated that the long-term agreement will provide Tripura with a dependable source of electricity and create a stronger foundation for future economic growth.
