Dehradun: The Executive Committee of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved a major sanitation and waste management plan for the upcoming Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027. The committee cleared the “Integrated Sanitation, Solid and Liquid Waste, and Public Health Management Plan” along with a financial sanction of ₹115.61 crore.
The entire project will be implemented under the Central Sector to ensure coordinated execution and high standards of cleanliness and public health management during the large-scale religious gathering.
Objective: Clean, Safe and Eco-Friendly Kumbh Mela 2027
The primary aim of the approved plan is to provide clean, safe, and environmentally sustainable facilities for the millions of devotees expected to attend the Haridwar Kumbh Mela in 2027.
The initiative focuses on strengthening sanitation infrastructure, improving waste disposal systems, and ensuring effective public health management throughout the event.

Large-Scale Sanitation Infrastructure Planned
Under the approved project, extensive sanitation facilities will be developed across the Mela area, including:
- 13,915 toilets
- 8,065 urinals
- 2,000 bathing units
These facilities are designed to significantly improve hygiene conditions and manage the massive footfall expected during the Kumbh Mela.
Solid Waste Management System Strengthened
To ensure efficient solid waste handling, the plan includes a comprehensive waste management network featuring:
- 4,840 garbage bins
- 31.38 lakh liner bags
- 491 waste collection vehicles
- 2 trash booms
- 15 ghat cleaning machines
- 190 spraying machines and tractors
- 55 fogging machines
- 30 grass-cutting machines
In addition, necessary supplies such as pesticides, PPE kits, first-aid kits, and road cleaning equipment will also be provided.
Advanced Waste Processing and Monitoring Systems
The project also includes modern waste treatment and monitoring infrastructure such as:
- Transfer station facilities for efficient waste movement
- Gas-based crematoriums
- Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs)
To ensure real-time supervision, a cloud-based dashboard will be developed for monitoring sanitation and public health operations throughout the event.
Uttarakhand CM Welcomes Approval
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed the approval of the ₹115.61 crore project, stating that it will significantly strengthen cleanliness, waste management, public health services, and monitoring systems for the Kumbh Mela.
He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Jal Shakti and concerned officials for the support and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing a clean, safe, and well-organized pilgrimage experience for devotees.
Towards a Model Cleanliness-Oriented Kumbh Mela
Officials believe that the integrated plan will help make Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027 a benchmark event in cleanliness, environmental protection, and sustainable mass gathering management, setting new standards for future large-scale religious events in India.
