New Delhi: NTPC Limited has achieved a major construction milestone at its 520 MW Tapovan Vishnugad Hydro Power Project (TVHPP) with the successful breakthrough of the project’s critical Head Race Tunnel (HRT).
The breakthrough was completed on July 8, 2026, marking a significant step towards the completion of one of NTPC’s key hydropower projects. The achievement was made through the successful physical alignment and joining of excavation works progressing from Face-02 and Face-03 of the underground tunnel.
Senior NTPC officials, along with engineers from the project’s main executing agency Hindustan Construction Company Limited (HCC), witnessed the breakthrough at the underground project site.
Head Race Tunnel Excavation Reaches 80% Completion
The Head Race Tunnel is a crucial component of the Tapovan Vishnugad Hydro Power Project, designed to carry water for power generation.
The latest breakthrough connected two major excavation sections of the tunnel system.
Key excavation achievements include:
- Face-02 excavation: 1,748 metres of underground tunnelling completed.
- Face-03 excavation: 981 metres of targeted heading excavation completed.
- Total HRT excavation progress: 9.7 km completed out of the total planned 12.1 km alignment.
- Overall excavation completion: Around 80% of the Head Race Tunnel excavation work is now complete.
The milestone brings the project significantly closer to the final stages of construction.

Engineering Challenge Overcome in Difficult Himalayan Terrain
The successful HRT breakthrough is considered a major engineering achievement due to the complex geological conditions of the Himalayan region.
The project team faced several challenges, including:
- Unpredictable rock formations
- Difficult underground construction conditions
- Structural and safety risks
- Limited working space inside the tunnel
Despite these challenges, engineers successfully completed the breakthrough while maintaining strict safety standards and ensuring structural quality.
The achievement will now allow the project to move forward with the next phase of concrete tunnel lining works.
NTPC Highlights Commitment to Safety and Clean Energy Development
Speaking on the occasion, Ajay Kumar Shukla, Executive Director and Head of Project, congratulated all stakeholders, contractors and field teams involved in achieving the milestone.
He especially appreciated the dedicated efforts of the HRT core team for their continuous work under challenging conditions.
He emphasized that NTPC remains committed to completing the project while maintaining the highest standards of:
- Safety
- Engineering quality
- Operational excellence
The breakthrough reflects NTPC’s focus on expanding India’s clean and sustainable energy infrastructure through reliable hydropower projects.
