New Delhi: The Delhi government has set an ambitious target to increase the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the national capital from the existing 9,000 to 32,000 under its new EV policy.
The move aims to accelerate electric mobility, improve charging accessibility and support the growing number of electric vehicles on Delhi’s roads. However, challenges such as limited land availability and rising electricity demand have prompted the government to focus on developing more solar energy-based charging stations.
Rising Electricity Demand Drives Need for Smart Charging Solutions
Delhi’s electricity demand has already crossed 8,700 MW, and the increasing adoption of electric vehicles is expected to further raise power consumption.
To reduce pressure on the existing electricity network, the government plans to promote renewable energy-based charging infrastructure.
Solar-powered EV charging stations will help provide sustainable charging solutions while reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources.
CM Rekha Gupta Reviews EV Charging Expansion Plan
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reviewed the implementation of the new EV policy during a meeting at the Delhi Secretariat.
The meeting was attended by Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh and senior officials from relevant departments.
The Chief Minister directed officials to identify suitable locations for charging stations and ensure uninterrupted power supply for their smooth operation.
She emphasized that charging infrastructure should be developed in a planned manner with modern facilities for EV users.
Focus on Fast Charging Technology and User Facilities
The Delhi government has directed authorities to prioritize the development of modern charging stations equipped with fast charging technology.
The upcoming charging stations will include facilities such as:
- Fast charging support for different types of electric vehicles
- Seating arrangements for users
- Drinking water facilities
- Other essential public amenities
The government also plans to gradually upgrade existing slow charging stations into fast charging facilities.
EV Charging Stations to Come Up at Key Public Locations
The government has identified several priority locations for setting up EV charging stations, including:
- Delhi Metro parking areas
- Municipal Corporation parking spaces
- Vacant spaces under elevated metro corridors
- DDA market areas
- Major malls
- Railway station surroundings
- Government premises
- Large commercial zones
All concerned departments have been asked to work together for faster implementation of the charging network expansion plan.
Delhi Targets 32,000 EV Charging Stations Within Four Years
The Delhi government aims to develop nearly 32,000 EV charging stations over the next four years.
The expansion plan will focus on providing convenient charging facilities near residential areas, workplaces and major public locations.
Officials will also work on integrating solar energy solutions and improving public amenities at charging stations to encourage more people to adopt electric vehicles.
New EV Policy Aims to Strengthen Sustainable Transport in Delhi
The expansion of EV charging infrastructure is a key part of Delhi’s strategy to promote clean transportation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
With increased use of renewable energy, fast charging technology and improved accessibility, the government aims to create a stronger EV ecosystem and support cleaner mobility across the capital.
