Chandigarh: The Punjab Government has intensified its efforts to ensure the safety and security of school-going children by strictly implementing the Safe School Vehicle Policy across the state.
Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Baljit Kaur said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the government is committed to ensuring that students travel to and from schools in a safe, secure, and reliable manner.
The minister emphasized that children’s safety remains a top priority and that strict action will continue against those violating mandatory safety regulations.
1,842 School Buses Inspected During April-May Drive
As part of a statewide safety campaign during the first two months of the financial year 2026-27 (April and May), authorities inspected 1,842 school buses across Punjab.
The inspection drive was conducted to improve the daily travel safety of thousands of students and ensure that school transportation vehicles comply with required safety standards.
During the inspections:
- 526 school buses were issued challans for violating safety norms.
- Three buses were immediately impounded due to serious violations and failure to meet mandatory safety requirements.
District Administrations Directed to Strengthen Inspections
Dr. Baljit Kaur stated that district administrations are regularly inspecting school buses under the Safe School Vehicle Policy to ensure strict compliance with safety guidelines.
With schools reopening in July after the summer vacation, all district authorities have been instructed to further strengthen enforcement activities.
The main objective of the campaign is to ensure that every vehicle transporting school children is:
- Roadworthy and properly maintained
- Equipped with mandatory safety features
- Compliant with government safety regulations
Punjab Government Adopts Zero-Tolerance Policy on Safety Violations
The minister reiterated that the Punjab Government has adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards any negligence that puts children’s lives at risk. She said that strict action against violators will continue, and officials have been directed to increase inspections and ensure complete implementation of the Safe School Vehicle Policy throughout the state.
Schools, Transport Operators and Parents Urged to Cooperate
Dr. Baljit Kaur appealed to school managements, transport operators, and parents to actively cooperate with the administration in ensuring safer school transportation.She urged everyone involved to use only those vehicles that fully comply with prescribed safety standards for carrying school children.

Highlighting the government’s commitment, Dr. Baljit Kaur said that the safety of children is non-negotiable.
She stated that every child has the right to travel safely to school and return home safely, and the Punjab Government is working towards achieving this goal through strict implementation of the Safe School Vehicle Policy.
