RITES Expands Global Rail Footprint with Locomotive Exports to Africa, Boosting ‘Make in India’ Vision

10 Cape Gauge locomotives delivered to Mozambique as RITES secures new contracts across Southern Africa, strengthening India’s global railway presence
Indian Masterminds Stories

Gurugram: RITES Limited is accelerating its position as a global railway solutions provider by expanding its export footprint across Southern Africa. Through advanced rolling stock deliveries and new international contracts, the company is showcasing India’s growing strength in delivering end-to-end, technology-driven rail infrastructure under the vision of “Make in India, for the World.”

Major Milestone: 10 Locomotives Delivered to Mozambique

A key achievement has been recorded in Mozambique, where RITES successfully completed the supply of 10 Cape Gauge diesel-electric locomotives (3,300 HP) to Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique.

The final shipment reached Maputo Port on April 16, 2026, marking the completion of the logistics phase of the contract signed in December 2023.

Advanced Locomotives Built for Harsh Operating Conditions

The locomotives were manufactured at Banaras Locomotive Works and designed specifically for Cape Gauge (1,067 mm) railway networks.

Key features include:

  • AC-AC traction systems
  • Microprocessor-based control systems
  • Remote monitoring and diagnostics
  • Advanced braking systems
  • Enhanced crew comfort for long-haul operations

These capabilities ensure improved efficiency, safety, and performance in demanding environments.

Engineering Excellence in Complex Export Project

This project stands out due to its technical complexity. India’s railway manufacturing ecosystem is largely focused on broad gauge systems, making the Cape Gauge export a significant engineering achievement.

The execution required:

  • Specialized design adaptation
  • Advanced engineering solutions
  • Strong vendor coordination
  • Seamless logistics from production to delivery

The successful completion highlights India’s ability to deliver end-to-end railway export solutions globally.

Strengthening Long-Term Partnership with Mozambique Railways

The project also reinforces RITES’ long-standing collaboration with Mozambique’s national railway operator CFM.

With nearly one-third of CFM’s locomotive fleet now sourced from India, the partnership reflects deepening bilateral cooperation in rail infrastructure development and technology exchange.

Expanding Presence Across Southern Africa

Beyond Mozambique, RITES is actively expanding its presence across key African markets:

  • In South Africa, new contracts with Talis Group and Ndalama Group involve customised 3,100 HP Cape Gauge locomotives
  • In Zimbabwe, a new order from Berhard Group marks entry into another strategic rail network
  • Additional repeat orders from ICVL in Mozambique highlight continued demand and trust

These developments position RITES as a major contributor to rail-led logistics, trade connectivity, and infrastructure modernization across the region.

Boost to India’s Global Infrastructure Leadership

The success of these projects underlines India’s growing reputation as a reliable global partner in infrastructure development. RITES is delivering cost-effective, customized, and high-performance railway solutions that meet international standards.

This expansion also supports stronger economic ties between India and African nations through improved transport and logistics networks.
