Kolkata: Sikkim and West Bengal are exploring stronger institutional and technical cooperation in animal breeding and livestock development, with a focus on modern breeding technologies, knowledge sharing and improved services for livestock farmers.

Dr. Pratik Sharma, CEO of the Sikkim Livestock Development Board (SLDB), met Dr. Gauri Shankar Konar, CEO of the Paschim Banga Go-Sampad Bikash Sanstha (PBGSBS), at the latter’s office in Salt Lake, Kolkata. Dr. Kaushik Shah, Assistant Project Director (Cryo), PBGSBS, also attended the meeting.

Focus on Modern Breeding Technologies

The discussions covered several areas where the two neighbouring states can work together to strengthen livestock development.

Key areas included scientific animal breeding, genetic improvement, artificial insemination, frozen semen technology and cryogenic services. The officials also discussed liquid nitrogen management, technical capacity building and other allied livestock activities.

The proposed cooperation could help Sikkim strengthen its breeding infrastructure while providing opportunities for technical exchange with West Bengal.

Technical Support for Sikkim

Dr. Gauri Shankar Konar assured the Sikkim Livestock Development Board of possible technical assistance and cooperation from West Bengal.

The two sides also discussed greater institutional collaboration, exchange of technical expertise and sharing of knowledge in animal breeding and related services.

For Sikkim, such collaboration could support efforts to improve breeding infrastructure and expand access to modern livestock services, particularly for farmers who depend on animal husbandry for their livelihoods.

Focus on Farmers and Rural Livelihoods

Dr. Pratik Sharma said Sikkim is committed to strengthening its animal breeding infrastructure and services. He noted that closer cooperation with West Bengal could create opportunities for technical collaboration, knowledge sharing and capacity building.

The partnership is expected to have a direct focus on livestock farmers by improving access to scientific breeding methods and modern technical services.

Better breeding services can contribute to improved livestock productivity and, in turn, support rural incomes and livelihoods.

A Step Towards Structured Inter-State Cooperation

The meeting marks a step towards building a more structured partnership between Sikkim and West Bengal in the livestock sector.

Both states could benefit from sharing technical expertise and developing joint approaches in areas such as breeding services, cryogenic technology and capacity building.

The proposed cooperation also reflects the importance of inter-State coordination in strengthening agriculture and allied sectors, particularly in neighbouring hill and eastern states.

If taken forward, the collaboration could improve institutional capacity, strengthen livestock breeding systems and expand modern services available to farmers. For rural communities dependent on livestock, stronger technical support could contribute to more sustainable and productive animal husbandry.
