New Delhi: Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, has announced the appointment of Mr. Subhasis Sengupta as its new Director (Operations). He officially assumed charge on 3 June 2026, bringing with him over three decades of extensive experience in steel production, maintenance, project execution, and plant operations management.
A Veteran Steel Industry Professional with Decades of Experience
Born on 14 July 1969 in Kolkata, Mr. Subhasis Sengupta is a seasoned steel industry leader known for his operational expertise and project leadership in India’s steel sector.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Bengal Engineering & Science University and a Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Design and Production Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Durgapur.
He began his professional journey after a brief stint at Reliance Industries before joining the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) as a Management Trainee (Technical) in 1992.

Leadership Roles at SAIL and Major Achievements
Before joining RINL, Mr. Sengupta served as Chief General Manager (Projects) at Durgapur Steel Plant, SAIL, where he played a crucial role in major brownfield expansion initiatives worth over ₹5,500 crore. He was also closely associated with the proposed 3 MTPA greenfield expansion project valued at approximately ₹28,000 crore.
In an earlier leadership role as Chief General Manager (Works) and Unit Head of SAIL Growth Works, he led a major operational turnaround. Under his leadership:
- Production increased by 51%
- Turnover grew by 108%
- Multiple initiatives were implemented to improve equipment reliability and operational efficiency

At RINL, Mr. Sengupta aims to steer the organization toward operational excellence and long-term sustainability. His key focus areas include:

He has also emphasized the importance of digital transformation in steel manufacturing, focusing on advanced technologies such as:

- Machine Learning (ML)
These technologies are expected to improve predictive maintenance, operational efficiency, and data-driven decision-making across plant operations.
Additionally, he plans to promote collaboration with leading global steel producers to adopt best industry practices.
