Umesh Chander Datta, IPS, Inspector General with the Special Protection Group (SPG), has been awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service on the occasion of Independence Day.
Datta, who is from Chandigarh and belongs to the Rajasthan cadre of the Indian Police Service, is currently serving in the SPG, the specialised force responsible for the security of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
An alumnus of Panjab University, Datta was a gold medallist during his university years. He also received the distinction of being named Best Officer Trainee in Outdoor Training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie.
Over a Decade of District Policing
During his career in Rajasthan, Datta served as District Superintendent of Police in several districts, including Barmer, Nagaur, Sri Ganganagar, Bhilwara and Alwar. His field postings spanned more than a decade.
He later took charge as Inspector General, Jaipur Range, where he served for over two-and-a-half years.
Datta subsequently joined the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and worked on several sensitive cases. His service was recognised with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service on Republic Day in 2016.
Experience Across Central Security Forces
Datta has also served with the Border Security Force (BSF). During his tenure, he received the BSF Director General’s Disc five times in recognition of his service.
His career has included assignments across district policing, criminal investigation and central security organisations. His latest recognition with the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service adds another distinction to a career spanning several important policing and security responsibilities.
