Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Sugar Industry and Cane Development Department has started selling sugar to the general public at a concessional rate of ₹52 per kg at a dedicated sales centre in Lucknow.
The initiative has been launched on the directions of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, with the department positioning it as a measure to provide consumers access to sugar at a controlled price.
The sales centre is being operated by the Uttar Pradesh State Sugar Corporation and the Cooperative Sugar Mills Federation at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Ganna Kisan Sansthan premises in Lucknow.
Sugar Available in Four Pack Sizes
Consumers can purchase sugar according to their requirements in the following pack sizes:
- 1 kg: ₹52
- 2 kg: ₹102
- 5 kg: ₹250
- 50 kg: ₹2,500
The department has said that consumers can purchase the commodity based on their household requirements.
Sales Centre to Remain Open on Working Days
The facility will operate on all working days from 10 am to 5 pm.
According to the department, arrangements have been made at the centre to facilitate convenient purchasing and avoid unnecessary administrative delays.
Initiative Aims to Offer Consumer Relief
The department said the controlled pricing of sugar, a commonly used household commodity, is intended to provide relief to consumers, particularly middle- and lower-income households.
The initiative comes at a time when sugar prices have been under pressure. Recent market reports showed wholesale prices around ₹51–₹52 per kg, while retail prices in Lucknow were higher, making the government-backed sales centre a cheaper option for consumers who can access it.
The Cane Development Department has appealed to residents of Lucknow to make use of the facility and indicated that further public-oriented relief measures could be taken in the future.
