VISAKHAPATNAM: Harish Kumar Gupta, a 1992 batch IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre and Director General of Police (DGP) of Andhra Pradesh, has announced that Visakhapatnam will soon get a dedicated IPS officer to oversee traffic management and long-term traffic planning.
The announcement was made on Tuesday in view of increasing traffic congestion and rapid urban expansion in the city.
Dedicated IPS Officer to Strengthen Traffic Management
Although Visakhapatnam already has a separate Traffic Police wing, the DGP said an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer would be appointed exclusively to focus on traffic-related issues.
The officer will be responsible for:
- Scientific traffic planning
- Congestion management
- Road safety measures
- Long-term traffic strategy
- Coordination with relevant agencies
The move is intended to bring a more systematic and technology-driven approach to managing the city’s growing transportation challenges.
Rapid Urban Growth Driving Traffic Pressure
Harish Kumar Gupta noted that Visakhapatnam has been witnessing significant urban development, resulting in a sharp rise in both population and vehicle density.
This growth has placed increasing pressure on the city’s road infrastructure and highlighted the need for specialized oversight to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
Announcement Made During Inauguration of New Police Building Complex
The DGP made the announcement while inaugurating a new police building complex in Visakhapatnam.
The facility will house:
- Kancharapalem Traffic Police Station
- Airport Crime Police Station
- Airport Traffic Police Station
The new complex is expected to enhance policing efficiency and improve service delivery in the city.
Scientific and Future-Oriented Traffic Planning
The proposed dedicated IPS officer will play a key role in developing sustainable solutions to Visakhapatnam’s traffic issues by using data-based planning and modern traffic management techniques.
The initiative reflects the Andhra Pradesh Police’s broader effort to strengthen urban policing and address infrastructure challenges in rapidly growing cities.
