New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed senior IPS officer Anand Jain as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the Union Territory of Ladakh. A 1999-batch officer of the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories) cadre, Jain was serving as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Armed Police, Jammu and Kashmir, before being transferred to Ladakh.

The appointment, announced on June 22, 2026, places one of the AGMUT cadre’s most experienced officers at the helm of policing in the strategically significant Union Territory.

Anand Jain Replaces K K Sharma

Anand Jain succeeds K K Sharma (IPS: 2012: AGMUT), who had been holding additional charge of the DGP post following the transfer of Mukesh Singh (IPS: 1996: AGMUT) to Manipur as the state’s Director General of Police.

With over 26 years of policing experience, Jain now takes charge of a region that occupies a critical position in India’s national security architecture due to its proximity to international borders.

Who Is IPS Anand Jain?

Anand Jain is a senior Indian Police Service officer of the 1999 AGMUT cadre. Over the past two decades, he has built a reputation as an experienced field officer with expertise in internal security, counter-terrorism operations, anti-corruption investigations, and police administration.

He entered the IPS through the UPSC Civil Services Examination and has since served in several challenging assignments across Jammu & Kashmir and at the national level.

Career Timeline of IPS Anand Jain

DGP, Ladakh (June 2026 – Present)

Jain has now been appointed as the Director General of Police of Ladakh, becoming the top police officer in the Union Territory.

His responsibilities will include maintaining law and order, strengthening border security coordination, managing internal security challenges, and enhancing policing in one of India’s most strategically sensitive regions.

ADGP, Armed Police, Jammu & Kashmir (January 2025 – June 2026)

Prior to his transfer, Jain served as Additional Director General of Police (Armed), Jammu & Kashmir.

In this role, he oversaw the functioning of the armed police units and played a key role in operational preparedness, security deployment, and force management.

IGP/ADGP, Jammu Zone (October 2023 – January 2025)

Before heading the Armed Police wing, Jain served as Inspector General of Police (IGP) and later ADGP of the Jammu Zone.

The position involved overseeing law and order, counter-terrorism coordination, and policing operations across the Jammu region.

Director, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB)

Anand Jain also served as Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Jammu & Kashmir.

During his tenure, he supervised investigations into corruption-related cases and strengthened anti-graft enforcement mechanisms across the Union Territory.

Senior Superintendent of Police in Sensitive Districts

Over the years, he held several critical field assignments as SSP in some of Jammu & Kashmir’s most challenging districts, including:

  • SSP Baramulla (served twice)
  • SSP Rajouri
  • SSP Reasi
  • SSP Jammu

These districts have historically been important from both security and administrative perspectives.

Early Operational Assignments

In the early phase of his career, Jain served in key policing roles such as:

  • SDPO Ganderbal
  • SP East Srinagar

These assignments helped shape his extensive operational experience in handling security and law-and-order challenges.

Experience at the National Level

Apart from his assignments in Jammu & Kashmir, Anand Jain has also served on central deputation.

National Investigation Agency (NIA)

As Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the National Investigation Agency, he handled sensitive national security and terrorism-related investigations.

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)

He also served with UIDAI, gaining experience in governance, technology-driven administration, and national-level project implementation.

Promotion to ADGP Rank

In December 2023, Anand Jain was promoted to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), marking a significant milestone in his career.

The promotion reflected his extensive experience and contributions to policing and internal security.

In January 2025, Anand Jain was awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service, one of the highest honours for police officers in India.
