New Delhi: In a significant appointment to India’s national security establishment, the Centre has named Dr Mahesh Dixit, an IPS officer of 1993 batch from Andhra Pradesh/Telangana cadre, as the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India’s premier domestic intelligence agency. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved his appointment for a two-year tenure.
Dr Dixit, currently serving as the Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau, will succeed Tapan Kumar Deka (IPS: 1988: Himachal Pradesh) after the latter’s extended tenure concludes on June 30, 2026. A qualified medical doctor who chose public service over medicine, Dixit brings nearly three decades of intelligence and internal security experience to one of the country’s most sensitive positions.
ACC Approves Appointment
According to the government order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr Dixit, IPS (AP:1993), Special Director, Intelligence Bureau, as Director, Intelligence Bureau for a period of two years from the date he assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
To facilitate his appointment, the government has granted him an extension in service under the provisions of Fundamental Rule (FR) 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.
He succeeds Tapan Kumar Deka, who headed the Intelligence Bureau since July 2022 and was granted two successive one-year service extensions.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is India’s oldest and premier domestic intelligence agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It is responsible for gathering and analysing intelligence related to internal security, terrorism, counter-intelligence, insurgency, organised crime, cyber threats and espionage. Who is Dr Mahesh Dixit?
Dr Dixit is a 1993-batch Indian Police Service officer of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh cadre, now allocated to the Telangana cadre following the state’s bifurcation.
Born in 1967 and originally hailing from Maharashtra, Dr Dixit is academically distinguished, having earned a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree before choosing a career in the civil services. His transition from medicine to policing has often been cited as an example of professionals bringing multidisciplinary expertise into public administration.
Early Police Career
After joining the IPS, Dr Dixit began his policing career as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Bellampally in Adilabad district.
Over the following years, he served in several important field assignments across the undivided Andhra Pradesh, including postings in Nizamabad, Karimnagar, and later as Superintendent of Police (SP), Visakhapatnam.
These early assignments provided him with extensive experience in district policing, crime control and public order management before he moved into intelligence operations.
Three Decades in Intelligence and Internal Security
Dr Dixit has spent the majority of his distinguished career within the Intelligence Bureau, handling some of India’s most sensitive internal security assignments.
He first served as Deputy Director of the Intelligence Bureau in Jammu & Kashmir between 2009 and 2012, a period marked by significant security challenges in the Valley.
Later, he headed the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB), Srinagar, from 2020 to 2024, where he played a key role in intelligence gathering and maintaining law and order following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
Officials credit him with overseeing critical intelligence operations during a period of heightened security concerns and assisting in maintaining stability across Jammu & Kashmir.
Experience Across Multiple Security Fronts
Apart from Jammu & Kashmir, Dixit has handled several strategically important assignments across the country.
His intelligence experience includes operations in:
- Nagaland and the Northeast
- Ladakh
- Anti-Naxal operations
- Bihar
- Counter-terrorism
- Counter-radicalisation
- Cyber security and information warfare
He has also been part of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ official team involved in discussions with civil society representatives in Ladakh.
Before his elevation, Dixit served as Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau, the agency’s second-highest position, where he coordinated nationwide intelligence operations and supervised several key security divisions.
Role During Article 370 Abrogation
One of the defining chapters of IPS Dixit’s career came during the period surrounding the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir.
As head of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau in Srinagar, he played a significant role in intelligence coordination and security management during one of the most sensitive transitions in the region.
He also reportedly supervised intelligence-related arrangements during the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting held in Srinagar in 2023, an event that drew international attention and required extensive security coordination.
Decorated Police Officer
Throughout his distinguished service, Dr Dixit has received several prestigious honours for his contributions to policing and national security.
His decorations include:
- President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2016)
- Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2009)
- Police Antrik Suraksha Seva Padak (2004)
These awards reflect his long-standing contribution to intelligence operations and internal security.
Succeeds Tapan Kumar Deka
Dr Dixit takes over from Tapan Kumar Deka, a 1988-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, who has led the Intelligence Bureau since July 2022.
During Deka’s tenure, the IB intensified efforts against terrorism, strengthened intelligence coordination among agencies and focused on emerging challenges including cyber threats, radicalisation and cross-border security.
The government granted Deka two successive one-year extensions, underscoring the importance of continuity in India’s intelligence apparatus.

With his appointment, the Centre has placed one of the country’s most experienced intelligence professionals at the helm of the Intelligence Bureau. Combining a medical background with nearly three decades of experience in intelligence, counter-terrorism, internal security and strategic operations, Dr Mahesh Dixit now assumes responsibility for leading India’s foremost domestic intelligence organisation at a time of evolving national security challenges.
