Indian Masterminds Stories

In a landmark moment for gender equality in the Indian Armed Forces, Squadron Leader Manisha Padhi of the Indian Air Force has been appointed as India’s first woman Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to a Governor. Her appointment to this prestigious role was confirmed by Mizoram Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati on November 29, 2023, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts toward empowering women in leadership positions.

A Historic First for the Armed Forces
Squadron Leader Padhi, an officer from the 2015 batch of the Indian Air Force, officially took charge during a ceremonial event held at the Raj Bhawan in Aizawl. Her appointment signifies more than just personal achievement-it reflects a broader shift in attitudes toward gender roles in defense and governance.

Traditionally, the position of ADC has been held by male officers. Padhi’s induction not only breaks a longstanding glass ceiling but also sends a powerful message about the increasing inclusivity within India’s military and administrative systems.

The Role and Its Significance
An Aide-de-Camp serves as a personal assistant and ceremonial aide to high-ranking officials, including Governors and the President. Typically, each Governor is supported by two ADCs – one from the armed forces and another from the police. Squadron Leader Padhi now serves alongside Zonun Thara, a state police officer, forming a dynamic team representing both military and civil enforcement bodies.

In this role, Padhi will accompany the Governor on official duties, assist with scheduling, protocol, and communications, and serve as a liaison between the Governor’s office and other institutions.

Manisha Padhi: From Odisha to Aizawl
Born in Berhampur, Odisha, and raised in a family with a deep-rooted military background, Padhi was inspired by her father, Honorary Flying Officer Manoranjan Padhi. Her early ambition to join the Indian Air Force led her to complete her engineering education at CV Raman College of Engineering, Bhubaneswar.

Clearing the Air Force Common Admission Test in 2015, she began her career in the administrative branch of the IAF. Over the years, she served in various capacities at Air Force stations in Bidar, Pune, and Bhatinda, gaining extensive experience that has equipped her for her current role.

Breaking Gender Barriers
Governor Kambhampati emphasized that Padhi’s appointment serves as a “symbol of changing times,” encouraging more women to strive for leadership roles. Her success is both a result of her dedication and a reflection of institutional willingness to embrace gender inclusivity.

The appointment has been widely lauded across the country as a bold step forward in recognizing the contributions of women in the defense forces. With increasing numbers of women in combat and command roles, Padhi’s position is a testament to the evolving landscape of the Indian military.

Family, Support, and Balance
Behind her success is a strong support system. Her father expressed immense pride in her achievements, calling her selection as ADC a proud moment for the family and for the state of Odisha. Padhi is married to Major Depak Singh Karki, an officer in the Indian Army. The couple exemplifies the challenges and triumphs of maintaining a dual-military household while excelling in their respective careers.

Looking to the Future
While Squadron Leader Padhi’s appointment is a singular achievement, it is also part of a broader narrative. The inclusion of women in strategic and ceremonial roles signals a future where merit, not gender, dictates opportunity.

As she embarks on this new journey, Padhi will likely serve as a role model for countless young women aspiring to join the armed forces. Her story is one of resilience, inspiration, and trailblazing courage.

Proud Moment
Squadron Leader Manisha Padhi’s appointment as India’s first female Aide-de-Camp to a Governor is a proud moment for the nation. It celebrates not only her personal dedication but also the Indian Armed Forces’ commitment to inclusivity. Her journey stands as a beacon for the next generation of women leaders, reminding us all that with determination and support, no barrier is insurmountable.
