Hyderabad: IPS Sinha is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 2025 batch who came into the spotlight after securing All India Rank (AIR) 170 in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination 2024. She cleared the highly competitive examination on her first attempt at the age of 21, marking an important milestone in her journey towards a career in policing.

Born on February 11, 2003, Sinha completed her initial professional training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad, Telangana. She participated in the passing-out parade of the 78th batch of regular recruits on October 17, 2026.

The batch comprised 135 IPS probationers, including 37 women, alongside 16 foreign officer trainees from Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. Sinha was reported to be the youngest officer in her training batch. Some media reports have described her as the country’s youngest IPS officer, although claims about the youngest officer nationally vary across reports.

Her achievement has drawn attention to her early success in the Civil Services Examination, her academic background and the journey that took her from Howrah, West Bengal, to the national police academy.

Urmi Sinha’s Date of Birth, Family and Educational Background

IPS Sinha was born on February 11, 2003. Although her family has roots in Bihar, she grew up in Howrah, West Bengal, where she completed her schooling. Her home state is recorded as West Bengal in the information cited by media reports.

Her father, Dr. Ranjit Sinha, is a paediatrician in Howrah, while her mother is a homemaker. The family’s ancestral roots are associated with Marwari Tola in Haveli Kharagpur, in Bihar’s Munger district. The family later settled in Howrah, where Urmi spent her childhood.

She pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. After graduating, she began preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, eventually securing a place in the IPS through her first attempt.

UPSC Journey: AIR 170 in the First Attempt at 21

IPS Sinha’s achievement in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024 is one of the defining milestones of her early career. She secured AIR 170, qualifying for the Indian Police Service at the age of 21.

After completing her graduation in 2023, she focused on preparing for the examination. Reports indicate that she prepared from home in Howrah, used online coaching and received guidance from mentors, including those associated with Apti Plus Academy.

Her success came through the examination’s three stages: the Preliminary Examination, the Main Examination and the Personality Test. Clearing all three in her first attempt helped her move directly from university studies into the civil services selection process.

Her journey also demonstrates that candidates can prepare for the UPSC examination through a structured study plan and online resources without necessarily relocating to a major coaching hub.

Which Cadre Has Urmi Sinha Been Allotted?

IPS Sinha has been allotted the Andhra Pradesh cadre of the Indian Police Service. Following the completion of her Phase-I training at SVPNPA on October 17, 2026, she is expected to proceed to field training in her allotted cadre.

Her specific district posting has not been established by the cited report. Therefore, while Andhra Pradesh is her allotted cadre, it would be premature to name a particular district or police assignment without an official posting order.

Field training is an important stage in an IPS officer’s professional development. It allows probationers to gain practical exposure to police administration, law and order, crime investigation, district-level policing and the day-to-day challenges of public service.

Urmi Sinha Among 37 Women in the 78th IPS Batch

Ms Sinha was among the 37 women IPS probationers in the 78th regular-recruit batch that completed Phase-I training at SVPNPA, Hyderabad. The larger group of 151 officer trainees included 135 Indian IPS probationers and 16 foreign trainees from Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives.

The passing-out parade marked the completion of the academy’s first phase of institutional training. The probationers will now move towards the next stage of their professional preparation, including practical exposure to policing in their respective cadres.

For Sinha, this transition marks the beginning of her journey from a successful UPSC candidate to a serving police officer in Andhra Pradesh.

What Makes Urmi Sinha’s Journey Noteworthy?

Ms Sinha’s early success rests on three notable milestones: qualifying for the IPS at 21, securing AIR 170 in her first UPSC attempt and completing her initial professional training as part of the 78th batch.

Her academic background in Political Science, preparation after graduation and selection for the police service have brought her journey into the public spotlight. Her next challenge will be to translate her academic preparation and institutional training into effective policing on the ground.

As she begins field training in Andhra Pradesh, her career will increasingly be shaped by practical experience, professional judgement, public engagement and the responsibilities entrusted to her as an IPS officer.
