Gandhinagar: Ahead of World Lion Day 2026, the Gujarat Forest Department has decided to create a specially designated 100-hectare enclosure at Ambardi Safari Park for lions involved in human attacks.

The move is part of the department’s periodic scientific relocation efforts aimed at reducing human-wildlife conflict, providing suitable habitats for wild animals and supporting long-term wildlife conservation.

100-Hectare Enclosure to Be Developed at Ambardi Safari Park

Dr Jaipal Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, said lions involved in human attacks will be kept in a suitable environment within a specially fenced area at Ambardi Safari Park.

He said necessary instructions have already been issued and work on developing the designated enclosure has begun.

The initiative is intended to provide a safe and controlled habitat for such lions while helping reduce the possibility of further conflict between the animals and local communities.

Move Aims to Reduce Human-Wildlife Conflict

The decision comes ahead of World Lion Day, observed annually on August 10, and forms part of the Gujarat Forest Department’s scientific approach to wildlife management.

According to the department, wildlife relocation may be undertaken for several reasons, including:

  • Reducing human-wildlife conflict.
  • Providing suitable and safe habitats for animals.
  • Treating injured or sick wildlife.
  • Managing animal populations.
  • Maintaining ecological balance.
  • Supporting long-term conservation of wildlife species.

Lions and leopards that stray into agricultural fields or residential areas may be captured and relocated to safer forest or sanctuary areas.

Similarly, crocodiles found close to human settlements near lakes or riverbanks may be shifted to safer water bodies.

Ambardi Safari Park Located in Gir Protected Area

Located near Dhari in Amreli district, Ambardi Safari Park is situated within the reserved forest area of the Gir Protected Area.

The park covers approximately 365 hectares and has emerged as an important wildlife tourism destination in Gujarat.

The facility provides visitors with an opportunity to experience the natural environment associated with the Gir landscape. Besides Asiatic lions, the park also conserves several other species.

These include:

  • Leopards
  • Chital
  • Nilgai
  • Chinkara
  • Peacocks
  • Various species of birds

Ambardi Safari Park Established in 2017

Ambardi Safari Park was established in 2017 with the objective of promoting wildlife conservation and increasing awareness about nature.

The park has modern safari facilities and a natural environment that allows visitors to experience Gujarat’s wildlife more closely.

It has attracted a significant number of tourists over the years and has become an important destination for people interested in wildlife and nature.

Park Supports Eco-Tourism and Local Employment

Beyond wildlife conservation, Ambardi Safari Park is also contributing to the growth of eco-tourism in Amreli district.

The development of the park has created opportunities for local employment while strengthening the region’s tourism sector.

With its wildlife, safari facilities and natural surroundings, the park has emerged as a major attraction for tourists interested in wildlife and nature.

The proposed 100-hectare lion enclosure is expected to further support scientific wildlife management while contributing to efforts to reduce human-lion conflict and promote long-term conservation.
