New Delhi: WWF-India’s Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) Programme Centre–Resource Partner (PC-RP), supported by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has launched a nationwide Green Diwali Campaign from October 20 to November 8, 2026.
The campaign urges citizens to avoid firecrackers and celebrate Diwali in a cleaner and more environmentally responsible manner. Aligned with the government’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), the initiative seeks to encourage sustainable habits among households, students and communities.
The campaign will engage schools, colleges, educational institutions, resident welfare associations and local communities. It will give special attention to the 130 cities covered under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), where reducing pollution remains an important environmental priority.
Green Diwali Campaign Focuses on Sustainable Celebrations
As part of the campaign, citizens are being encouraged to take the Green Diwali Pledge and adopt practical measures to reduce the environmental impact of festive celebrations.
The recommended actions include avoiding firecrackers, encouraging family members and neighbours to do the same, using traditional diyas and energy-efficient lights, avoiding single-use plastics, segregating waste and choosing locally made products.
Educational institutions and community organisations are also being encouraged to organise pledge drives during school assemblies, classroom activities, rallies and community meetings.
By involving students and local groups, the campaign aims to spread awareness about environmentally responsible celebrations beyond individual households and into neighbourhoods and institutions.
Citizens Encouraged to Take Carbon Footprint Survey
The campaign also encourages citizens to participate in WWF-India’s Carbon Footprint Survey to understand how their daily activities and consumption patterns contribute to their environmental footprint.
The survey is intended to help participants assess their habits and identify opportunities to make more sustainable choices.
Citizens can access the survey here:

Schools and Communities Asked to Report Campaign Activities
Schools, colleges, EIACP centres, community groups and individuals participating in the campaign have been asked to submit details of their activities through an online reporting form.
The submission form is available here:
Green Diwali Campaign Activity Reporting Form
Participants are required to provide the name and location of their institution or organisation, details and date of the activity, the number of participants who took the pledge, geo-tagged photographs and a brief report.
Selected entries may be featured on EIACP websites and social media platforms, offering participating institutions and communities an opportunity to showcase their efforts.

Promoting Cleaner Air Through Collective Action
By combining public pledges, educational activities and community participation, the Green Diwali Campaign seeks to make environmentally conscious choices part of festive traditions.
Its focus on avoiding firecrackers, reducing plastic use, segregating waste and supporting local products reflects a broader effort to encourage lifestyle changes in line with Mission LiFE.
Through its nationwide outreach, WWF-India’s EIACP programme is calling on citizens, educational institutions and community organisations to make Diwali celebrations cleaner and more sustainable.
