New Delhi: Arjun Mk-1 tank overhaul has finally begun after years of delay, marking a major milestone for India’s indigenous armoured fleet. The Indian Army has started a pilot refurbishment programme for its Arjun Mk-1 main battle tanks at Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), Avadi, Chennai. The project will modernise the tanks with 26 advanced upgrades derived from the newer Arjun Mk-1A variant.

The initiative is aimed at improving combat capability, mobility, surveillance, and operational readiness while extending the service life of the Army’s indigenous tank fleet.

Arjun Mk-1 Tank Overhaul: Two Pilot Tanks Selected For Complete Rebuild

Under the first phase of the programme, two Arjun Mk-1 tanks will be fully dismantled, refurbished, and rebuilt. This is the first time since the tank entered service in 2004 that its hull and turret will undergo a complete overhaul. Earlier maintenance activities were mainly limited to engines and powerpack systems.

The pilot project will help engineers create standardised repair manuals and assembly procedures that will later be used for the overhaul of the remaining 124 Arjun Mk-1 tanks currently in service.

Why Arjun Mk-1 Tank Overhaul Was Delayed

A report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had highlighted that the first major overhaul was due in 2020. However, the responsible agency had not been finalized at the time.

Another audit pointed to shortages of spare parts and inadequate repair facilities, which affected the operational availability of several tanks.

Despite these challenges, limited maintenance work continued through Engine Factory Avadi (EFA) and DRDO’s Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE).

Arjun Mk-1 Tank Overhaul: 26 Mk-1A Upgrades To Enhance Combat Performance

The upgraded tanks will receive 26 modern features adapted from the Arjun Mk-1A programme. Among these, six are considered major capability enhancements that significantly improve battlefield effectiveness.

Major Upgrades Being Added

Key improvements include:

  • New Commander’s Panoramic Sight for enhanced surveillance.
  • Mk-II Gunner’s Main Sight.
  • Automatic Target Tracker.
  • Improved Muzzle Reference System.
  • Redesigned tracks with increased horn height.
  • Advanced running gear system for better mobility.

These upgrades are expected to improve target acquisition, tracking, accuracy, and mobility in challenging battlefield conditions.

Additional Safety And Utility Enhancements

The remaining 20 modifications focus on operational reliability and crew safety. These include an 8-kilowatt Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), improved fire detection and suppression systems, LED headlights, periscope heating elements, and enhanced dust protection for desert operations.

Complex Refurbishment Involving Multiple Defence Agencies

The overhaul project requires support from several defence and industrial organisations. The tank engine will be serviced at Engine Factory Avadi, while transmission systems will be handled by RENK’s Indian subsidiary. The 120mm rifled gun will be refurbished by Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL), and the gun control system will be overhauled by Bosch Rexroth in Germany.

Many critical components such as batteries, gyros, tracks, and sights will be sourced from Indian manufacturers, supporting the government’s indigenous defence manufacturing efforts.

Challenges In Arjun Mk-1 Tank Overhaul

The Arjun Mk-1 tank has historically faced maintenance challenges because of its dependence on imported components. When first inducted, a significant portion of its parts came from countries such as Germany, Belgium, Israel, France, and the United Kingdom. Some original suppliers are no longer operational, making replacement and support more difficult.

Logistics have also been a challenge because the heavy tank requires specialised transport systems for movement across the country.

Technical Specifications Of Arjun Mk-1

The Arjun Mk-1 tank is powered by a 1,400-horsepower MTU MB 838 Ka-501 V10 diesel engine paired with a RENK transmission. The indigenous main battle tank was developed by DRDO and entered Indian Army service in 2004. Two armoured regiments currently operate the platform in Rajasthan’s desert sector.

Arjun Mk-1A Programme Continues Alongside Overhaul

The Indian Army is also awaiting delivery of 118 Arjun Mk-1A tanks ordered under a ₹7,523 crore contract signed in 2021. The Arjun Mk-1A features 72 improvements over the original version and is designed to deliver better firepower, mobility, survivability, and indigenous content. The ongoing overhaul project will help bridge the capability gap by bringing several Mk-1A technologies to the existing Arjun Mk-1 fleet.
