Countering Social Ills With Folk Music Of Jhajjar

Indian Masterminds Stories

Jhajjar Police is using a musical tool to fight social evils like crimes and drugs. With this lyrical move, SP Arpit Jain has amalgamated promotion of local folk music with creating awareness about social ills.

In conversation with Indian Masterminds, Mr. Jain, an IPS officer of 2014 batch, said that a song remains in memory for a longer time and, hence, it is the best way to create awareness.

ROPING IN LOCAL ARTISTS

“If you have listened to some songs in your childhood and hear these again now, you will be able to recall the music and the lyrics too. That is the impact music and songs have. It can be the best way to create awareness. The things that can’t be done with 10 speeches can be done with a single song,” Mr. Jain explained.

Hence, under his leadership, Jhajjar Police is roping in local singers and using their songs and videos to make people aware about the ugly side of drugs and crimes. This is not the first time that Mr. Jain is using music to fight social problems.

Earlier, in Sirsa, he took a similar initiative. After his transfer and posting in Jhajjar, he called a meeting of local social media influencers and found out some local talents in music. They were called in two official functions too, and were appreciated for their work.

“I was going through their work and found some of their songs on social issues. We selected the songs and are using these on our social media platforms. Soon, we will play these songs on big screens in the villages,” Mr. Jain said.

IMPACTFUL STORIES

In one music video, the story of a drug addict is shown. The central character wanted to be a doctor but got influenced by drugs. Not only his life was spoiled but he died on the same day of his sister’s marriage. This story shows how drugs can not only destroy an individual but the whole family.

In another video, the story of a person who gets involved in crimes is shown. He gets arrested and is eventually hanged to death, leaving his family agrieved. His house is sold and the family is left helpless.

“We have tried to show that drugs and crimes destroy families. Everyone should avoid these. It is good that we are getting good response on each video,” said Mr. Jain.

COUNTERING VIOLENCE

As the songs are in local languages, they can be easily understood by the people. Since there are multiple songs on various platforms that promote violence indirectly or directly, Mr. Arpit Jain’s move is a counter to such videos. Soon, the police department will coordinate with local singers to produce more such informative videos. This way, the local artists will get work and encouragement and, at the same time, contribute towards fighting the menaces.
