The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), slated to unfold in the scenic state of Goa from November 20-28, 2024, is not merely an event; it is a celebration of storytelling, innovation, and cultural dialogue. Recognised as South Asia’s premier film festival, IFFI brings together filmmakers, cinephiles, and industry professionals from across the globe. Its 2024 edition promises to be more dynamic and inclusive than ever before, featuring over 270 films, a dedicated platform for young filmmakers, and an expanded Film Bazaar.

As India’s cinematic landscape grows increasingly prominent on the world stage, this year’s festival serves as both a reflection of its achievements and a launchpad for future possibilities.

FILM BAZAAR 2024

Running alongside IFFI from November 20-24, the Film Bazaar, South Asia’s largest film market, continues to foster collaboration and innovation in the global film industry. This year marks a significant milestone as the Bazaar expands into series development, a move aimed at leveraging the booming OTT and streaming sectors.

IRTS officer Prithul Kumar (2000 batch), Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Managing Director of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), remarked, “The Film Bazaar’s expansion into series development reflects India’s growing prominence in global storytelling. Producers now have an excellent platform to market and distribute their projects internationally.”

Under the guidance of Jerome Paillard, former head of the Cannes Film Market, Film Bazaar 2024 has curated an impressive lineup of mentors, juries, and collaborators. Over 50 applications for series projects have been received, a demonstration of the growing interest in Indian narratives. The addition of an OTT Award, introduced last year, highlights the increasing impact of streaming platforms on the global stage.

GLOBAL CINEMA AT ITS BEST

IFFI 2024 will showcase 180 international films from 81 countries, including 16 world premieres, 43 Asian premieres, and 109 Indian premieres. The festival celebrates diversity and inclusion, with 47 films directed by women and 66 by debut filmmakers.

The International Competition section will feature 15 feature films (12 international and three Indian), competing for the prestigious Golden Peacock Award and a cash prize of ₹40 lakh. In addition to the Best Film, awards will be presented in categories like Best Director, Best Actor (male and female), and Special Jury Prize.

The Indian Panorama segment will highlight 25 feature films and 20 non-feature films, reflecting the nation’s linguistic and cultural diversity. The lineup includes significant works such as Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (Hindi) and Ghar Jaisa Kuch (Ladakhi).

Australia, this year’s Country of Focus, will bring a curated selection of films, headlined by the festival opener Better Man by Michael Gracey, a biographical drama on Robbie Williams.

HONORING LEGENDS AND NURTURING YOUNG TALENT

IFFI 2024 strikes a balance between honoring cinematic legends and nurturing emerging talent. The Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to acclaimed Australian filmmaker Philip Noyce, whose celebrated works include Patriot Games, The Bone Collector, and Salt.

The festival also pays homage to icons like Raj Kapoor, Mohammed Rafi, Tapan Sinha, and Akkineni Nageswara Rao through restored classics, exhibitions, and commemorative stamps by India Post. Films such as Awara and Devadasu (1953) will be screened, offering audiences a glimpse into India’s rich cinematic heritage.

Meanwhile, the Creative Minds of Tomorrow initiative has been expanded to support 100 young filmmakers, up from 75 last year. These aspiring talents, selected from over 1,000 entries, will participate in workshops, masterclasses, and networking events, gaining valuable industry exposure.

ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSIVITY

For the first time, IFFI 2024 has partnered with Svayam, an accessibility organisation, to ensure the festival is inclusive for everyone. Features such as audio descriptions, sign language interpretation, and physically accessible venues highlight this commitment. Volunteers have been trained to assist differently-abled attendees, ensuring a seamless experience.

Efforts to make the festival eco-friendly include waste reduction, renewable energy usage, and sustainable transport options, aligning with global sustainability goals.

A CULTURAL EXTRAVAGANZA

Adding to the cinematic celebration, IFFI 2024 introduces IFFiesta, a cultural festival featuring live performances, interactive zones, and food stalls. The entertainment arena will offer a mix of film, music, dance, and art.

Highlights include a Sky Lantern Competition, a carnival parade celebrating Indian cinema’s journey, and immersive exhibitions dedicated to icons like Raj Kapoor and Tapan Sinha.

MASTERCLASSES, PANELS, AND INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENT

One of IFFI’s most anticipated elements is its series of masterclasses and panel discussions, featuring luminaries like A.R. Rahman, Mani Ratnam, Shabana Azmi, and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. International guests, including Philip Noyce and John Seale, will share their expertise, covering topics such as sound design, AI in filmmaking, and acting in the digital age.

Film Bazaar 2024 will host 350+ projects, with activities such as the Buyers-Sellers Meet and Knowledge Series workshops on film production and distribution. Partnerships with organisations like FICCI aim to enhance industry participation and collaboration.

SUPPORTING REGIONAL AND GLOBAL NARRATIVES

IFFI 2024 places a spotlight on regional cinema with a dedicated segment on Goan films, featuring 14 titles that celebrate local talent and culture.

The festival’s Rising Stars section will highlight emerging directors, while the Mission Life segment focuses on eco-conscious storytelling. Four new international programming sections, including a Treaty Country Package curated in collaboration with the British Film Institute, further underscore IFFI’s global appeal.

A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

Since its inception in 1952, the International Film Festival of India has been a beacon for cinematic excellence. Accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations (FIAPF), it is one of only 44 competitive feature film festivals worldwide.

IFFI’s mission is to provide a platform where filmmakers, cinephiles, and industry professionals converge to celebrate the art of cinema. Over the years, it has evolved into a vibrant global hub that showcases culturally significant films while fostering meaningful collaborations.
