Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur became the first in the country to be certified as ‘Har Ghar Jal’ district under the Jal Jeevan Mission launched by the central government on August 15, 2019. It is now the only district in the country where all its villages (254 in total) have declared themselves as ‘Har Ghar Jal village’ through a resolution passed by the Gram Sabhas, implying that every household there has now access to safe drinking water. Today, we bring to you Burhanpur’s success story.

FROM 37% TO 100%

Back in 2019 when the mission was initiated in August, it was noted that only 37 per cent of the households in the district have access to clean and safe drinking water. However, in the time span of three years, the district has done a commendable job with the help of its people. The district now has safe drinking water in each and every household.

In 2019, Burhanpur district only had 37,241 houses with tap connection, but now in July 2022, all the households of the district, that is, 1,01,905 households, have access of functional tap water connection in 254 villages, which includes 43,701 tribal households.

Not only this, in addition, all 640 schools, 547 anganwadi centres and 440 other public institutions also got the facility of functional tap water connection. The other 440 public institutions include 167 gram panchayats, 50 healthcare centres, 109 community centres, 45 ashramshalas, 2 community toilets, and 67 other government offices.

MESSAGE FROM COLLECTOR

IAS officer Praveen Singh Adhayach, who is the Collector of Burhanpur, said during an interaction with media, “I want to convey my heartfelt thanks to the people of Burhanpur district and the whole team involved in the process who worked hard even during the Covid-19 pandemic and other challenges.”

He further said that the specialty of Burhanpur is that now they have given the responsibility of looking after the Jal Jeevan mission programme to the women of self-help group in the Gram Panchayat. This will not only help in providing water to the people, but on the other hand, it will provide empowerment to the rural women at the gram panchayat level.

CERTIFICATE INDICATION

The certificate provided to the district indicates and confirms that every household is getting regular supply of water of clean quality. Furthermore, it also indicates no leakage from the distribution pipeline in the village and that all the roads that were dug up to lay the water pipelines are restored successfully upon the completion of the water supply work.

ABOUT MISSION JAL JEEVAN

Jal Jeevan Mission is envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India. The programme will also implement source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through grey water management, water conservation, and rain water harvesting.
