Patna: In a significant development for India’s energy sector, SJVN Ltd, a central public sector undertaking, has confirmed that the 660 MW Unit-1 of the Buxar Thermal Power Project in Bihar successfully completed a 72-hour trial run on 5 November 2025.  This marks a major milestone for the 1,320 MW project located at Chausa in Buxar district and signals readiness for commercial operations.

Background of the SJVN Buxar Thermal Power Project

The Buxar Thermal Power Project (BTPP) is being implemented by the wholly-owned subsidiary SJVN Thermal Private Ltd (STPL) under SJVN Ltd.

Earlier, in August 2025, BTPP’s first unit was synchronized with the national grid—a key step before commercial operations.

With India’s power demand continuing to rise and regional shortages persisting in parts of Eastern India, the Buxar plant is seen as a timely addition to the grid. It is expected to boost energy security in Bihar, support industrial growth, and improve quality of life for residents.

Key Highlights of the SJVN Buxar Thermal Power Project

  • The project is designed with two units of 660 MW each (total 1,320 MW).
  • It uses supercritical technology, which offers higher efficiency and reduced environmental impact compared to older thermal power units.
  • The project is expected to generate about 9,828.72 million units of electricity annually once fully operational.
  • Around 85% of this power is earmarked for the state of Bihar, with the rest to be absorbed into the national pool.

Importance of SJVN Buxar Thermal Power Project

Trial Run Success: According to the official announcement, SJVN’s Chairman & Managing Director, Bhupender Gupta, stated that the 660 MW Unit-1 completed its 72-hour trial run on 5 November 2025.

This successful trial means the unit has met the performance standards required for commercial operation, including stability, load management and safety checks under continuous operation.

Readiness for Commercial Operation: With the trial completed, SJVN noted the unit is “all set for commercial operation”.  This transition means the power generated from Unit-1 can now be dispatched on a commercial basis—bringing revenue, supply stability and grid support.

Technological & Efficiency Gains: The use of supercritical technology is a key highlight. These systems operate at higher temperatures and pressures, making them more efficient and less polluting versus conventional thermal plants.

Such advanced technology marks a step forward for thermal power infrastructure in India, aligning with goals of sustainability and improved performance.

Impact of SJVN Buxar Thermal Power Project: Bihar & Beyond

For Bihar and eastern India, the implications are significant:

  • Enhanced power supply can reduce peak-hour load shedding and improve reliability for households and industries.
  • A larger stable power base can attract further industrial investment in the region, supporting economic growth.
  • For SJVN, the project adds to its portfolio, strengthening its position in India’s power generation market.

Way Forward

Commercial Operation Date (COD): Now that the trial run is complete, SJVN will finalise the COD for Unit-1, paving the way for full operations and revenue flow.

Commissioning of Unit-2: The second 660 MW unit remains to be commissioned; once that happens, the full 1,320 MW capacity will be online.

Operational Ramp-up: SJVN will optimize operations, ensure full integration with the national grid and begin full‐scale dispatch.

Regional Grid Benefits: Over time, Bihar and adjoining states will see improved supply, better grid stability and potential reduction in power costs/shortages.
