New Delhi: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on 22 May 2026 laid out a sweeping new national security roadmap while addressing the BSF Investiture Ceremony and Rustamji Memorial Lecture in New Delhi. He announced that the government will roll out a Smart Border Project aimed at creating a fully technology-enabled, “impregnable” border security grid within the next year.
The initiative will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Border Security Force (BSF) by integrating drones, radars, modern surveillance cameras, and advanced monitoring systems.
‘Smart Border Project’ to Transform Border Management
Shah said the upcoming project will modernize India’s border infrastructure along both Pakistan and Bangladesh frontiers.
Key features include:
- Drone-based surveillance systems
- Radar and sensor integration
- AI-enabled monitoring networks
- Real-time intelligence coordination
- Upgraded command-and-control systems
He said the objective is to make border management “technology-driven, coordinated and impenetrable.”

Call for Integrated Security Framework
The Home Minister emphasized that border security can no longer function in isolation. He called for stronger coordination between:
- Border Security Force
- State police forces
- Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs)
- Intelligence agencies
- District and village-level administration
He described border protection as a “territorial responsibility”, not just a force-specific duty.
Focus on Infiltration, Narcotics & Drone Threats
Shah highlighted emerging security challenges including:
- Illegal infiltration
- Narcotics and arms smuggling
- Fake currency networks
- Drone-based cross-border trafficking
- Cyber and hybrid warfare threats
He reiterated that India’s approach is shifting from containment to complete elimination of security threats at the source.
‘Zero Tolerance’ on Infiltration and Demographic Change
Referring to infiltration concerns, Shah said the government will intensify efforts to identify and remove illegal entrants. He also mentioned a planned High-Powered Demography Mission, aimed at addressing demographic changes linked to cross-border infiltration.
He stated that India will not allow “unnatural demographic change” and will strengthen enforcement mechanisms in coordination with state governments, especially in border states like Tripura, Assam, and West Bengal.
BSF to Play Key Role in National Security Expansion
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah said India’s security doctrine has undergone a transformation since 2014.
He added that BSF will now play a larger role in:
- Counter-infiltration operations
- Anti-narcotics campaigns
- Border intelligence gathering
- Coordination with civil administration
He also announced upcoming welfare measures for CAPF personnel and their families.
Conclusion
The announcement marks one of the most significant upgrades in India’s border security architecture in recent years, with a strong focus on technology integration, multi-agency coordination, and stricter infiltration control mechanisms.
