Vijayawada: Reaffirming its commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced its ambition to emerge as India’s leading State in climate action, energy conservation and green development. The roadmap envisions achieving 12 per cent economic growth through greater adoption of renewable energy, energy-efficient technologies and water conservation measures.

The announcement was made by Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad while unveiling a joint report prepared by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under the Ministry of Power and the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM).

CM Chandrababu Naidu’s Green Growth Vision

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has outlined a long-term vision of accelerating economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability.

He noted that green energy, efficient use of resources and conservation-driven development would become key pillars of Andhra Pradesh’s growth strategy.

Energy Efficiency Can Deliver 40% of Climate Solution

Highlighting the importance of energy conservation, the Chief Secretary observed that energy efficiency alone has the potential to contribute nearly 40 per cent towards combating climate change.

He expressed confidence that the collaborative efforts of the Central and State governments would evolve into a national model for fulfilling India’s climate commitments and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

State to Deploy Advanced Energy-Efficient Technologies

The Andhra Pradesh government plans to adopt energy-efficient technologies developed by leading national agencies, including:

  • Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)
  • Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL)
  • Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL)

These technologies will be implemented across multiple sectors, including municipal administration, urban development, MSMEs and welfare institutions, to improve energy savings and reduce carbon emissions.

Renewable Energy Already Accounts for 37% of Installed Capacity

The Chief Secretary highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s strong renewable energy base.

According to the report:

  • Total installed power generation capacity stands at 21,457 MW.
  • 37 per cent of this capacity comes from renewable energy sources.

The government intends to further accelerate investments in clean energy as part of its long-term climate strategy.

Green Cover to Increase Significantly by 2047

As part of its environmental roadmap, Andhra Pradesh has also set ambitious afforestation targets.

The State plans to:

  • Increase green cover from 30% to 37% by 2030
  • Expand green cover further to 50% by 2047

The initiative is expected to strengthen biodiversity, improve ecological balance and contribute significantly to climate resilience.

Focus on Sustainable Development

Officials said the climate action strategy integrates renewable energy expansion, efficient resource utilisation and environmental conservation with economic development.

The government believes that combining technological innovation with sustainable public policies will enable Andhra Pradesh to achieve faster growth while reducing its environmental footprint and positioning itself as a national leader in climate action.
