Patna: The government of Bihar is set to develop a major 125-km highway network along the Ganga river at an estimated cost of ₹5,500 crore. The ambitious project includes the construction of Vishwamitra Path, Ganga-Ambika Path, Narayani Path, and the expansion of JP Ganga Path Phase-2.
Officials say the initiative aims to transform regional connectivity and boost economic and tourism activity along the river corridor.
Three New Ganga-Side Corridors Planned Under PPP Model
The Bihar State Road Development Corporation is currently identifying agencies for the survey and development of three major highways under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The proposed corridors include:
- Vishwamitra Path (Buxar–Ara–Maner) – 90 km
- Ganga-Ambika Path (Bidupur–Dighwara) – 56 km
- Narayani Path (Darihara–Dumariya Ghat, Gopalganj) – 73.51 km
These roads will be developed with private sector investment, where toll collection will be used for cost recovery.

JP Ganga Path Phase-2 Construction in Full Swing
Alongside the new corridors, work on JP Ganga Path Phase-2 is progressing rapidly. The 35.65 km-long project will connect Digha to Koilwar.
Key features of the project include:
- 17.65 km at-grade four-lane road from Sherpur to Koilwar
- 18 km elevated four-lane corridor from Digha to Sherpur
- Construction along the Ganga river alignment for improved urban connectivity
Officials describe it as a key infrastructure project for Patna’s growing transport needs.
₹5,500 Crore Investment to Transform Connectivity
The combined investment across all projects is estimated at ₹5,500 crore. Authorities aim to complete construction within the next four years.
Once completed, the network is expected to:
- Improve connectivity between Patna and western Bihar
- Reduce travel time significantly across regions
- Enhance freight movement for agriculture and trade
- Boost religious and heritage tourism along the Ganga belt
PPP Model to Drive Infrastructure Development
The government plans to execute these highway projects under the PPP model, allowing private companies to invest in construction and recover costs through toll collection.
Officials believe this approach will accelerate infrastructure development while reducing the financial burden on the state.
Economic and Regional Impact Expected
The new Ganga corridor projects are expected to bring major socio-economic benefits to Bihar, particularly in districts along the Ganga and Son river regions.
Key expected outcomes include:
- Faster transport of agricultural produce
- Growth in regional trade and logistics
- Improved access to pilgrimage and heritage sites
- Stronger inter-district connectivity
The large-scale highway expansion planned by the government of Bihar marks one of the biggest infrastructure initiatives in the state’s recent history. With projects like Vishwamitra Path, Narayani Path, and JP Ganga Path Phase-2, Bihar aims to build a modern, high-speed road network along the Ganga river corridor.
