Raipur: Chhattisgarh is witnessing a major expansion of its railway infrastructure, with rail projects worth ₹51,080 crore currently underway to improve connectivity, strengthen industrial logistics and provide better facilities for passengers. Under the Centre and state government’s coordinated efforts, the state is focusing on new railway lines, track doubling, electrification and the modernisation of existing railway stations.

The expansion is expected to benefit passengers, industries, farmers and local businesses by improving transportation, reducing logistics costs and creating new opportunities for employment and investment. Modern railway stations equipped with improved waiting areas, facilities for persons with disabilities, cleaner premises and other passenger amenities are also expected to make train journeys safer and more convenient.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said railway infrastructure in Chhattisgarh was expanding significantly under the double-engine government. He added that new railway projects and the expansion of modern facilities would strengthen the state’s development and support the vision of a developed Chhattisgarh.

Chhattisgarh Railway Budget Allocation Rises to ₹7,470 Crore

The Centre has increased the railway budget allocation for Chhattisgarh to ₹7,470 crore for the financial year 2026-27, compared with an annual average allocation of ₹311 crore during 2009-14. According to the state government’s figures, this represents an increase of approximately 24 times in the annual average allocation.

The investment aims to reduce congestion on busy railway routes, improve the transportation of industrial and mineral cargo, and extend rail connectivity to areas where services remain limited.

Chhattisgarh is an important industrial and mineral-producing state in central India. A stronger railway network is expected to support its economic growth through several benefits:

  • Lower logistics costs: Improved rail capacity can help industries transport goods more efficiently.
  • Industrial growth: Better connectivity can support coal, iron ore, steel, cement and power-related industries.
  • Investment opportunities: Improved transport infrastructure can encourage new industrial and commercial investments.
  • Agricultural market access: Better rail connectivity can support the movement of agricultural produce.
  • Employment generation: Infrastructure projects and related economic activities can create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
  • Improved passenger services: Modern stations and expanded railway lines can make travel more convenient.

Kharsia–Naya Raipur–Parmalakasa Rail Corridor to Ease Congestion

The proposed Kharsia–Naya Raipur–Parmalakasa rail corridor is an important part of Chhattisgarh’s railway expansion strategy. The approximately 278-km-long corridor was approved by the Union Cabinet in April 2025 with an estimated cost of ₹8,741 crore. The project’s revised estimated cost was subsequently reduced to ₹7,854 crore, according to the information provided by the state government.

The corridor is intended to provide additional railway capacity by bypassing busy sections around Bilaspur, Raipur and Durg, helping accommodate both passenger and freight trains.

The project is expected to:

  • Reduce operational pressure on busy railway sections.
  • Improve connectivity for emerging industrial areas, including Baloda Bazar.
  • Increase freight capacity for coal, iron ore, steel, cement and power-related industries.
  • Improve the movement of goods towards markets and ports.
  • Help reduce dependence on road transportation for freight movement.

By providing an additional rail route, the corridor is expected to support national freight movement and improve the efficiency of industrial transportation in the state.

Railway Projects to Strengthen Bastar Connectivity

Improving railway connectivity in the Bastar region is another major priority. Several projects and proposals are aimed at connecting remote areas, supporting mineral transportation and expanding passenger services.

Rowghat–Jagdalpur Railway Line

The proposed 140-km Rowghat–Jagdalpur railway line is an important project for improving connectivity in the region. Land acquisition for the project has been completed, according to the state government’s information.

Once developed, the line is expected to improve rail access in Bastar and support regional economic activities.

Kirandul–Kottagudem and Gadchiroli–Bijapur–Kirandul Rail Projects

Survey work is underway for the proposed 180-km Kirandul–Kottagudem railway line and the 490-km Gadchiroli–Bijapur–Kirandul (Bacheli) railway line.

These proposed routes are intended to expand railway connectivity in mineral-rich and relatively underserved areas. Their development could improve freight transportation and provide additional connectivity to the wider railway network.

Dalli Rajhara–Rowghat Railway Project

Under the Dalli Rajhara–Rowghat railway project, passenger train services have already started on the 77-km Dalli Rajhara–Antagarh section.

The introduction of passenger services has connected thousands of rural residents to the railway network, improving access to transportation and nearby economic centres.

Work on extending the railway line towards Rowghat is progressing. Once completed, the project is expected to connect the Rowghat iron ore mines directly with the Bhilai Steel Plant, strengthening industrial logistics and supporting the local economy.

The doubling of the Kirandul–Kottavalasa railway line has also increased the capacity for freight and passenger movement in the Bastar region.

Proposed Katghora–Dongargarh Railway Line to Connect New Areas

The proposed Katghora–Dongargarh railway line will cover approximately 295 km. The planned route will pass through Katghora, Kartala, Mungeli, Kawardha and Khairagarh before reaching Dongargarh.

The project is proposed to be developed through a joint venture between the Ministry of Railways and the Chhattisgarh government, with a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) proposed for its implementation.

The railway line is expected to connect areas where rail services are currently unavailable or limited. If developed, it could offer several benefits:

  • Improve passenger movement between towns and regional centres.
  • Support the transportation of agricultural produce.
  • Strengthen trade and commercial activities.
  • Improve access to tourist destinations.
  • Create new opportunities for local businesses and employment.

The project is part of the broader effort to extend railway infrastructure to underserved parts of Chhattisgarh.

New Railway Corridors Proposed for North Chhattisgarh

Several additional railway corridors are being considered to improve connectivity in northern Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas.

The proposed projects include:

  • Sardega–Pathalgaon–Ambikapur: Approximately 244 km.
  • Dharamjaigarh–Pathalgaon–Lohardaga: Approximately 301 km.
  • Ambikapur–Barwadih: Approximately 200 km.

According to the information provided, these projects are expected to receive further consideration from the Ministry of Railways, with the proposals aimed at advancing approval and survey processes.

The proposals were discussed in August 2026, when the need to accelerate decision-making and surveys was raised.

If implemented, the corridors could improve connectivity across northern Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas, supporting trade, tourism, mineral transportation and local employment.

32 Railway Stations to Be Modernised Under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme

Alongside the construction of new railway lines, Chhattisgarh is also focusing on upgrading existing railway infrastructure and improving passenger amenities.

Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 32 railway stations in the state are being developed at an estimated cost of ₹1,680 crore, according to the state government.

The station redevelopment programme aims to provide a better passenger experience through improved facilities, cleaner premises and more organised station infrastructure.

Key areas of improvement include:

  • Better waiting rooms and passenger amenities.
  • Facilities for persons with disabilities.
  • Cleaner and more organised station premises.
  • Improved passenger movement and station infrastructure.
  • More convenient and comfortable travel experiences.

The modernisation initiative is expected to improve the quality of railway services and make stations more accessible to passengers.

PM Modi Virtually Inaugurates Upgraded Champa, Balod and Sarona Stations

The virtual inauguration of the upgraded Champa, Balod and Sarona railway stations by Prime Minister Narendra Modi marks another milestone in Chhattisgarh’s railway development, according to the state government’s statement.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the initiative. Sai said railways were not merely a means of transportation but also an important foundation for economic and social development. He added that the upgrading of stations such as Champa, Balod and Sarona would support trade, tourism, local economic activity and regional development.

The improved facilities are expected to make travel more convenient for residents while supporting employment and commercial opportunities in surrounding areas.

Rail Infrastructure to Support Developed Chhattisgarh Vision

With railway projects worth ₹51,080 crore underway, increased budgetary support, proposed new corridors and station modernisation, Chhattisgarh is seeking to strengthen its position as an important industrial and logistics hub.

The expansion of railway infrastructure is expected to improve passenger connectivity, facilitate mineral and industrial freight movement, support agricultural markets and encourage investment across the state.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the coordinated efforts of the Centre and state government were giving fresh momentum to railway development. The ongoing and proposed projects are intended to improve connectivity across urban, rural, industrial and remote regions while supporting the broader vision of a developed Chhattisgarh.
