Traditional crimes are now accompanied by sophisticated offenses such as:

  • Cybercrime and online financial frauds
  • Digital arrests and technology-based scams
  • Complex crime patterns involving digital evidence

He stressed that advocates must not only understand these evolving threats but also develop the capability to argue such cases effectively by leveraging digital evidence analysis and modern research tools.

Today, the rate and nature of crimes are changing rapidly. Cybercrime, digital arrests, online fraud, and technology-based offenses are increasing,” the CJI remarked, underscoring the urgency for legal professionals to stay updated with contemporary tools and knowledge.

The Role of Technology in Judicial Efficiency

Justice Surya Kant pointed out that equipping lawyers with access to e-libraries, digital resources, and advanced research platforms can significantly enhance the efficiency of India’s justice delivery system.

He noted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s judiciary was recognized internationally for its uninterrupted delivery of justice through virtual courts and digital platforms, setting a global precedent.

By advocating technology adoption, the CJI emphasized that the legal profession must not lag behind other sectors in adopting digital tools that enable faster case preparation, streamlined procedures, and enhanced legal research.

CJI Surya Kant also shared personal reflections during his address. Originating from Petwar village in Hisar district, he began his legal journey practicing at the local bar before rising through the ranks to become the Chief Justice of India.

“Although my time in Hisar may not have been very long, my relationship with this bar is eternal,” he said, acknowledging the support, mentorship, and affection he received from the Hisar legal community throughout his career.

Focus on Young Advocates and Global Competency

The CJI directed a special message toward young lawyers, encouraging them to think beyond India’s geographical boundaries.

With India’s economic growth attracting international investment and legal disputes increasingly crossing borders, he said advocates should:

  • Master technological tools
  • Understand global legal trends
  • Prepare for cross-jurisdictional litigation

Tomorrow, you may be required to argue cases that extend beyond the territorial and geographical jurisdiction of this country,” he cautioned, emphasizing the need for a global mindset among today’s advocates.

Judicial System Strengthening and Future Outlook

Justice Surya Kant reiterated that advocates are a crucial link in ensuring timely and equitable justice for citizens. To reduce delays and improve judicial outcomes, the legal fraternity must prioritize continuous skill development, innovation adoption, and resource enhancement.

Legal experts and observers believe this call to action reflects a broader commitment to modernizing India’s legal ecosystem and encouraging the profession to move collectively toward a more tech-savvy and globally competitive future.
