New Delhi: Coal India Limited (CIL), the world’s largest coal producer, is planning to establish its first overseas trading office in Singapore as part of its strategy to diversify beyond coal and expand into iron ore, critical minerals and strategic minerals, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Coal India has applied to Singapore authorities to register the office, which is also expected to support the company’s efforts to explore and acquire mineral assets overseas, the sources said.
Singapore Office to Support Overseas Mineral Expansion
The proposed Singapore office is expected to serve as a platform for Coal India’s growing international mineral business.
According to the sources, the office will help the company:
- Expand its critical and strategic minerals business
- Explore overseas mineral assets
- Support potential acquisitions
- Strengthen its iron ore trading activities
- Develop international trading opportunities
The move comes as Indian state-run companies seek to secure overseas supplies of critical minerals and reduce dependence on external sources, particularly China.
Coal India did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the proposed Singapore office.

Coal India Eyes Mineral Opportunities Across Africa and Americas
Coal India is evaluating mineral opportunities in several resource-rich regions as it looks to build a portfolio beyond coal.
The company is reportedly exploring bauxite assets in Ghana and other parts of Africa, while also examining opportunities in rare earth minerals.
For lithium, Coal India is focusing on Chile, while opportunities for other critical minerals are being evaluated in Canada and Australia.
The overseas opportunities are currently at various stages of evaluation, with some still in the preliminary phase.
Coal India Expands Beyond Coal into Iron Ore
The company has already started diversifying into other mineral sectors.
Earlier this month, Coal India won an iron ore block in Odisha through a competitive auction, marking its entry into iron ore mining.
The move forms part of the company’s broader strategy to expand its mineral portfolio and strengthen its presence in resources beyond thermal coal.
Lithium Assets in Chile Under Consideration
Coal India’s international diversification plans also include lithium, a critical mineral used extensively in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
Reuters had earlier reported that Coal India was considering the acquisition of a unit of Canada’s Wealth Minerals, which has lithium mining assets in Chile.
Such an acquisition could provide Coal India with potential access to lithium resources in one of the world’s important lithium-producing regions.
India Seeks Greater Access to Critical Minerals
The expansion into critical and strategic minerals comes as India seeks to strengthen its access to resources required for clean energy technologies and manufacturing.
Critical minerals such as lithium, rare earth elements and bauxite are important for sectors including:
- Electric vehicles
- Battery storage
- Renewable energy
- Advanced manufacturing
- Electronics and technology
Indian state-owned companies have been exploring overseas assets to diversify supply sources, although efforts to secure strategic mineral resources abroad have so far produced limited results.
Coal India’s Overseas Strategy Supports Diversification
The proposed Singapore trading office represents another step in Coal India’s efforts to diversify its business and build capabilities across the wider minerals value chain.
By combining domestic mineral expansion with overseas exploration, trading and potential acquisitions, the company is seeking to position itself for opportunities emerging from India’s growing demand for critical minerals and strategic resources.
