Shimla: BRO Project Deepak 66th Raising Day was celebrated on May 4, 2026, in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, highlighting over six decades of service in building critical infrastructure in the Western Himalayas. Operated under the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Project Deepak has played a vital role in road construction, disaster response, and strategic connectivity. The celebration marks its continued contribution to national security and regional development in Himachal Pradesh.

Details of BRO Project Deepak 66th Raising Day

Project Deepak, one of the oldest initiatives under the Border Roads Organisation, was raised in 1961. Since then, it has been actively working in difficult terrains across Himachal Pradesh, including key districts like Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti.

Over the years, the project has built and maintained more than 1,100 km of roads. These include high-altitude and border roads that are essential for connectivity and defence movement.

BRO Project Deepak 66th Raising Day: Key Role in Strategic Infrastructure

Project Deepak has been at the forefront of constructing important routes like the historic Hindustan-Tibet Road. It has also developed major stretches such as the Manali-Leh axis.

These roads are crucial for connecting remote areas and ensuring smooth supply lines for the armed forces. The project continues to upgrade and maintain these routes to meet modern needs.

What is the Importance of BRO Project Deepak

The work of Project Deepak directly supports India’s defence preparedness. By maintaining strategic road networks, it ensures that forces can move quickly in high-altitude regions.

At the same time, these roads help local communities by improving access to markets, healthcare, and education. This dual benefit strengthens both national security and regional growth.

Outstanding Contribution in Disaster Management

Project Deepak has also shown strong commitment during natural disasters. Teams under the BRO have carried out several rescue missions in recent years.

  • In May 2023, BRO teams helped around 300 stranded motorists at Baralacha Pass.
  • In July 2023, more than 250 civilians were evacuated from Chandratal during a high-altitude rescue operation.

These efforts highlight the organization’s humanitarian role in difficult conditions.

A Legacy of Excellence in Challenging Terrain

Working in the Himalayas is extremely challenging due to harsh weather and tough geography. Despite this, Project Deepak has consistently delivered high-quality infrastructure.

Its contribution over 66 years reflects dedication, resilience, and technical excellence in one of the toughest environments in the world.
