Thimphu/New Delhi: Project DANTAK 66th Raising Day was celebrated on April 24, 2026, in Thimphu, Bhutan, marking over six decades of India’s infrastructure partnership with Bhutan.

The initiative, run by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under India’s Ministry of Defence, has played a crucial role in building roads, bridges, and key infrastructure across Bhutan. The celebrations not only honored past achievements but also highlighted the project’s growing importance in strengthening India-Bhutan relations and regional connectivity.

What Is Project DANTAK?

Project DANTAK is an overseas infrastructure project launched in 1961 under an agreement between India and Bhutan. Its main aim is to develop road connectivity and support Bhutan’s socio-economic growth.

Over the years, it has become a symbol of strong bilateral ties. It focuses on building and maintaining roads, bridges, airfields, and public infrastructure in Bhutan.

66 Years of Service: Key Highlights from the Celebration

The 66th Raising Day event in Thimphu included:

  • Inter-school quiz competitions
  • Felicitation of outstanding personnel
  • Tribute to martyrs who sacrificed their lives

These activities reflected both professional excellence and community engagement.

Project DANTAK: Massive Infrastructure Contributions in Bhutan

Project DANTAK has significantly transformed Bhutan’s infrastructure landscape. Key achievements include:

  • Construction of over 1,500 km of roads
  • Development of the East–West Highway connecting Trashigang to Thimphu
  • Building of Paro International Airport and Yongphula Airport
  • Creation of bridges, hospitals, schools, and telecom networks

These developments have improved connectivity, boosted tourism, and supported economic growth in Bhutan.

Modernisation Push: Focus on Faster and Safer Connectivity

In recent years, DANTAK has shifted focus to modernization and capacity building.

Key projects include:

  • Double-laning of Confluence–Haa road (Phase I)
  • Upgradation of Samdrup Jongkhar–Trashigang highway (168 km)

These upgrades have reduced travel time, improved safety, and enhanced regional connectivity.

Disaster Response and Strategic Importance

One of the most critical roles of Project DANTAK is disaster management.

  • It restores roads quickly after landslides and floods
  • Ensures uninterrupted connectivity in difficult terrains

This makes it vital not just for development but also for strategic and emergency response purposes.

Project DANTAK: Ongoing and Future Projects in Bhutan

Currently, DANTAK is working on several important projects, including:

  • Road construction in Nganglam–Dewathang and Samrang–Jomotsangkha
  • Highway strengthening on Damchu–Chhukha axis
  • Development of alternate routes like Panbang–Nganglam

These projects align with Bhutan’s development goals while maintaining environmental balance.

India–Bhutan Relations: Strengthened Through Infrastructure

The project reflects deep strategic and diplomatic ties between India and Bhutan. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bhutan in November 2025, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to stronger cooperation.

Project DANTAK continues to act as a bridge of friendship, trust, and shared progress between the two countries.
