Dehradun: In a significant step toward regional cooperation and sustainable development, the first meeting of the Himalayan States Coordination and Policy Planning Council was held on Friday at the Chief Minister’s residence under the chairmanship of Pushkar Singh Dhami.
The meeting focused on strengthening inter-state coordination among Himalayan regions, addressing shared challenges, and formulating a unified development strategy.
Focus on Shared Challenges and Joint Strategy
During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on creating an integrated roadmap for regional growth. Key issues included:
- Climate change
- Disaster management
- Tourism development
- Biodiversity conservation
- Water resource management
- Development of border areas
Chief Minister Dhami emphasized that Himalayan states share similar geographical, environmental, and social conditions. He highlighted that collaboration and exchange of best practices can lead to more effective policymaking.
Balancing Ecology and Economy
The Chief Minister stressed that maintaining a balance between ecology and economy is essential to improving the quality of life for people in the region. He noted that Uttarakhand is rich in natural resources and biodiversity, with immense potential in:
- Himalayan conservation
- Medicinal plant cultivation
- Environmental sustainability initiatives
He also directed officials to study successful initiatives from other Himalayan states and adopt them as “best practices.”
Strong Push for Water Conservation and Environmental Protection
Dhami reiterated the importance of water conservation, noting that the state government is actively working on rejuvenating natural water sources.
He also called for greater collaboration with institutions working in environmental conservation and emphasized the need for regular expert consultations, workshops, and policy dialogues to ensure scientific and practical decision-making.
Experts Call for Scientific Research and Joint Task Force
Key officials and experts shared their insights during the meeting:
- Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan highlighted the need for a unified approach and stronger collaboration with national institutions.
- Council member Kishore Upadhyay stressed updated scientific studies on Himalayan ecology.
- Former DGP Anil Raturi emphasized improving local livelihoods through better use of regional resources.
Experts also suggested:
- Formation of a joint task force for Himalayan states
- Scientific assessment of river flow and water levels
- Conservation of cultural and natural heritage
- Protection of alpine grasslands (bugyals)
- Promotion of medicinal plant resources
Way Forward
The Chief Minister assured that all suggestions from the meeting will be implemented swiftly. He emphasized continuous dialogue with experts and institutions to build stronger, evidence-based policies.
The meeting marks an important milestone in fostering collaboration among Himalayan states, aiming for sustainable development while preserving the fragile ecosystem of the region.
