At 3,000 to 5,500 metres above sea level, Ladakh is a land where almost everything comes with a challenge.
Water is scarce. Winters are severe. The growing season is short. Vast stretches of exposed terrain are vulnerable to erosion and degradation, while climate change is adding another layer of uncertainty to an already fragile ecosystem.
And yet, across this cold desert, patches of green are beginning to emerge. They are appearing along the banks of the Indus, around monasteries, across protected forests and in spaces once considered too harsh for large-scale ecological restoration.
Behind this larger effort is IFS Rajesh S., AGMUT 2000, currently serving as Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, UT Ladakh. Nominated for the Eco Warrior Awards 2026 under the Environment Conservation category, Rajesh has been associated with a portfolio of nature-based interventions that seek to redefine what ecological restoration can mean in a high-altitude cold desert.
The idea is not simply to plant more trees. It is to rebuild ecological systems.

Beginning With the Indus
In Ladakh, the Indus is far more than a river flowing through a spectacular landscape. It is the ecological lifeline around which human settlements, agriculture and biodiversity have developed for centuries.
That understanding lies at the heart of the Indus River Green Corridor, launched at Spituk Pharka in March 2026.
The initiative aims to create green buffers along the river using native and locally adapted species and gradually connect plantations, riverbanks and degraded areas. The larger purpose is to improve ecological vitality, protect vulnerable riverbank areas and create a more connected landscape.
The first phase brought together an unusually broad group of stakeholders: the administration, defence and paramilitary forces, students, local communities and the Spituk monastery, which provided land for the plantation.
It marked a shift in the way greening is approached in Ladakh. Rather than treating plantation as an isolated activity, the initiative looks at the river and its surrounding landscape as one ecological system.
Choosing Survival Over Numbers
In a region where rainfall can be less than 100 mm annually, planting a tree is only half the job. The real question is whether it can survive.
This has shaped the choice of species being used across Ladakh’s restoration programmes. Sea Buckthorn, Oleaster, Willow, Black Poplar and White Willow have been selected because of their adaptability to the cold-arid conditions and their established association with the region’s riverine and human landscapes.
The approach is deliberately ecological: instead of introducing species simply because they grow successfully elsewhere, the focus is on species capable of surviving Ladakh’s particular climate and contributing to its ecological needs.
The wider programme includes native-species afforestation, community woodlots and food forests, creating green spaces that can provide environmental as well as social and livelihood benefits.
A 27-Acre Transformation at Choglamsar
Perhaps one of the most striking examples of Ladakh’s changing approach to restoration is the 27-acre Choglamsar Protected Forest, located around seven kilometres from Leh along the Indus.
The area was originally established on barren and erosion-prone land. Over time, it developed into an ecological buffer capable of helping stabilise riverbanks, conserve soil and support biodiversity.
Its recent redevelopment has taken the idea several steps further.
The protected forest has been transformed into Leh’s first public green space, bringing together conservation, recreation and environmental education. The restored area includes a nature trail, cycling track, biodiversity and wellness zones, gazebos, viewpoints, pedestrian pathways, children’s play areas and study corners carrying information about wildlife and environmental conservation.
The significance goes beyond creating a recreational destination. Choglamsar demonstrates how degraded land can be restored into a functioning ecological and public asset without separating conservation from people’s everyday relationship with nature.
When Monasteries Join the Green Movement
Ladakh’s restoration efforts are also extending beyond government-controlled spaces. At Thiksey Monastery, 7.5 hectares of land were provided for a plantation involving 5,000 climate-resilient saplings. The initiative brought together monks, students, ITBP personnel and NCC cadets, turning plantation into a collective community exercise.
The same spirit was visible at Spituk, where the monastery provided one hectare of land for the Indus Green Corridor.
Such partnerships are particularly important in Ladakh, where settlements and institutions are spread across a vast and difficult terrain. Ecological restoration cannot depend entirely on government machinery. It needs people living in these landscapes to become participants in protecting them.
This community-supported approach also creates something that survival rates alone cannot measure: ownership.
In Ladakh, Water Comes First
The greatest challenge facing any greening initiative in Ladakh is water.
The region receives extremely little rainfall and depends heavily on snow and glacial meltwater. The paradox is that while water can arrive in considerable quantities during a short period, much of it can rapidly flow through the landscape without adequately replenishing soil moisture and groundwater.
This makes conventional plantation methods unsuitable.
The restoration strategy therefore increasingly combines plantation with water management, soil-moisture conservation and groundwater recharge. Measures such as drip irrigation and small water-retention structures are being incorporated to improve water-use efficiency and give young plants a better chance of surviving.
The goal is consequently not to simply put saplings into the ground. It is to create the conditions in which they can establish themselves, regenerate and eventually become part of a functioning ecosystem.
From Trees to Wildlife
The benefits of this work extend well beyond the plantations themselves.
Restored riverbanks can reduce erosion and improve soil stability. Growing vegetation can provide habitat for insects, birds and small mammals. Healthier riparian areas can improve ecological productivity, while better-connected landscapes can strengthen wider habitat networks.
This matters for Ladakh’s most celebrated wildlife as well.
The Snow Leopard, for instance, occupies the high mountain ecosystems of the region. Its survival depends on much more than the existence of remote rocky terrain. It ultimately relies on healthy prey populations, functioning habitats and ecological conditions that can withstand increasing human and climatic pressures.
The restoration initiatives therefore form part of a broader landscape-level approach: one that seeks to strengthen ecological connectivity between river valleys, degraded areas and high-altitude habitats.
The Real Test Begins After Plantation
The hardest part of ecological restoration in Ladakh begins after the sapling is planted. It has to survive extreme winters, limited water, grazing pressure and the region’s short growing season. A plantation that looks impressive on the day of planting means little if the trees cannot establish themselves over the years that follow.
This has encouraged a convergence-based approach involving the Forest Administration, local communities, monasteries, educational institutions, defence and paramilitary forces and other agencies.
It also reflects a larger change in how success is measured. The emphasis is gradually moving away from simply counting saplings towards asking whether those saplings survive, whether vegetation regenerates, whether soil and water conditions improve and whether biodiversity benefits from the intervention.
A Different Vision for Ladakh
Across the Indus corridor, Choglamsar, Thiksey and other restoration sites, Ladakh is experimenting with a different model of mountain development.
It combines carbon sequestration, water security, habitat recovery, biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods with community participation.
In doing so, the work associated with Rajesh S. and the Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment, UT Ladakh, points towards a larger idea: Nature-Positive Mountain Development.
The ambition is not to turn Ladakh into a conventional green landscape. It is to restore greenery where the ecology allows it, protect the systems that already exist and build connections between fragmented landscapes.
In a place where even a single tree represents a considerable ecological investment, every surviving sapling carries a larger meaning.
The Indus is beginning to acquire green edges. Barren land is becoming public forest. Monasteries are becoming partners in restoration. Communities are becoming custodians.
And slowly, in one of the world’s most unforgiving environments, Ladakh is showing that even a cold desert can be given a chance to grow again.
