The proposal was presented by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)—two major state-owned defence companies. These organizations are responsible for manufacturing and supplying the Akash missile systems.

The move aligns with India’s “Make in India and defence export strategy, which focuses on supplying cost-effective and reliable systems to friendly nations.

What is the Akash-1S Missile System?

The Akash-1S is an upgraded version of India’s original Akash air defence system. It comes with a major improvement—a locally developed active radio frequency (RF) seeker.

Key Features:

  • Can track and destroy targets independently
  • Higher accuracy compared to older versions
  • Effective against fighter jets, drones, and cruise missiles
  • Improved reaction time in combat

This upgrade removes dependency on ground-based guidance during the final stage of attack, making it more efficient and precise.

Akash Prime: Designed for Extreme Conditions

India has also offered the Akash Prime variant, which is an advanced version optimized for difficult environments.

Highlights of Akash Prime:

  • Equipped with an active RF seeker
  • Better performance in extreme weather conditions
  • Improved reliability and mobility
  • Suitable for varied terrain operations

Akash Prime was tested in challenging conditions and has shown strong performance, making it attractive for countries like Malaysia.

India Malaysia Akash Missile System Deal: Operational Capabilities

Both Akash-1S and Akash Prime fall under the medium-range air defence category.

Performance Details:

  • Range: 25–30 kilometers
  • Speed: Up to Mach 2.5
  • Multi-target engagement capability
  • Integrated radar and command systems

These systems can work with advanced radar networks and centralized command centres, forming a complete air defence shield.

Why Malaysia is Interested

Malaysia is currently upgrading its defence capabilities. The country is focusing on building a multi-layered air defence system to counter modern threats.

This comes under its National Defence Industry Policy (DNIP) introduced in 2026. The policy emphasizes:

  • At least 30% local content in defence procurement
  • Domestic maintenance and repair capabilities
  • Technology transfer and self-reliance

India’s offer fits well into these requirements, as it includes opportunities for local manufacturing and long-term collaboration.
