Assam: The Government of India has formally notified the acquisition of 382.82 acres of private land in Bokajan village of Sonitpur district, Assam, marking a significant advancement in the country’s defence infrastructure in the eastern theatre.

The land acquisition will support the comprehensive upgrade and expansion of the Tezpur Air Force Station, a key Indian Air Force (IAF) facility located near India’s sensitive northern borders.

This move comes as part of broader efforts to fortify India’s military capabilities amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific, particularly along the India-China border.

Details of Tezpur Air Force Station

On January 2, 2026, the Central Government issued an official notification under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, for the acquisition of approximately 382.82 acres of land.

The notification empowers the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to take possession of the land required for infrastructure development, deployment of advanced weapons systems, and enhanced strategic assets.

The acquired land falls in Bokajan village, Sonitpur district, positioning the expansion project in a region that anchors India’s defence posture in the eastern sector.

What is the Importance of Tezpur Air Force Station

Here are the major importance of Tezpur Air Force Station;

Historic and Operational Significance

Tezpur Air Force Station, also known as Salonibari Air Force Station, traces its origins to World War II when it was initially constructed by the Royal Indian Air Force in 1942. Later, it evolved into a full-fledged air base in 1959.

Today, the base serves as a major hub under the Indian Air Force’s Eastern Air Command and is home to Su-30MKI fighter squadrons, including the No. 106 Squadron, known for air defence and offensive counter-air operations.

The station’s location — approximately 150–200 kilometres from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China — makes it strategically crucial for rapid aerial responses in the Northeast.

Enhanced Defence Capabilities

The land acquisition paves the way for the installation of advanced weapon systems, strategic assets, extended runways, new hangars, and upgraded operational infrastructure.

Although specific systems have not been publicly disclosed, the initiative aligns with India’s push to modernise its air capabilities across high-priority risk fronts.

Evolving Geopolitical Climate

The eastern sector — especially near the India-China border — remains a focal point of military readiness. In recent years, infrastructure strengthening in this area has gained momentum as part of a broader deterrence strategy and to foster quick reaction capabilities.

Eastern Air Command Reinforcement

Tezpur’s upgrade is part of a wider pattern of bolstering military readiness across India’s eastern flank.

The Indian Air Force has been upgrading multiple airfields and advanced landing grounds (ALGs) in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Nagaland, to ensure better force mobility, surveillance coverage, and emergency response.

Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Defence Infrastructure

This acquisition aligns with national initiatives such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat, which prioritise self-reliance in critical defence infrastructure. By improving runway capacity and logistics support, India aims to sustainably project airpower across wider operational theaters.
