Odisha: India achieved another major milestone in indigenous defence technology after the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted the maiden flight trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) weapon system off the coast of Odisha.

The TARA weapon system is India’s first indigenous glide weapon designed to convert unguided bombs into precision-guided weapons, improving strike accuracy and operational capability.

What is the TARA Weapon System?

The Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) is a modular glide weapon kit developed by DRDO. It is specially designed to transform conventional unguided warheads into precision-guided glide weapons.

The system improves the range, accuracy, and lethality of air-delivered weapons while keeping costs low. Defence officials said the weapon can accurately engage ground-based targets from safer stand-off distances.

Who Manufactured TARA Weapon System?

The TARA weapon system has been developed by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, along with several DRDO laboratories and Indian defence industry partners.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the project involved Development-cum-Production Partners (DcPP) and Indian private industries, which have already started production activities for the system.

Maiden Flight Trial of TARA Weapon System

The maiden flight trial of the TARA weapon was conducted on May 7, 2026, off the Odisha coast with support from the Indian Air Force.

Officials confirmed that all mission objectives were successfully achieved during the test. The flight validated the weapon’s guidance, range extension, and precision strike capabilities.

Why TARA Weapon System is Important for India

The successful test of the TARA weapon system is considered a major boost for India’s indigenous precision-strike capability.

Key Benefits

  • Converts ordinary bombs into smart precision weapons
  • Improves strike accuracy against enemy targets
  • Enhances stand-off attack capability
  • Low-cost indigenous solution
  • Supports India’s self-reliance in defence production

Experts believe such systems reduce dependence on expensive imported smart weapons and improve the combat efficiency of the Indian Air Force.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Congratulates DRDO and IAF

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Air Force, industry partners, and scientists involved in the successful trial.

He described the achievement as an important step towards strengthening India’s indigenous defence capability and enhancing precision warfare technology.

India’s Growing Indigenous Defence Strength

The successful TARA test comes at a time when India is rapidly advancing its indigenous missile and smart weapon programmes.

In recent months, India has also conducted successful tests of advanced hypersonic missiles, naval anti-ship missiles, and air defence systems developed by DRDO. These developments indicate India’s increasing focus on advanced indigenous warfare technologies.

Boost for Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Defence

The TARA weapon programme aligns with the Indian government’s push for “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” in the defence sector.

The growing involvement of Indian private industries in defence production is expected to strengthen the country’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and reduce import dependency in the coming years.
