Game Changer for Indian Air Force: Tejas Mk1A to Get Israeli X-Guard Decoy to Outsmart Deadly Home-on-Jam Missiles

The Indian Air Force is upgrading Tejas Mk1A with the Israeli X-Guard towed decoy system. This advanced technology will help counter modern home-on-jam missiles and improve aircraft survivability in combat.

New Delhi: The Tejas Mk1A X-Guard Towed Decoy integration is a major step to improve India’s air combat survivability. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is planning to equip its indigenous Tejas Mk1A fighter jets with the Israeli-made X-Guard system to counter modern “home-on-jam” (HOJ) air-to-air missiles.

These missiles can track jamming signals, making traditional defence systems less effective. This move shows how India is upgrading its fighter fleet to face new-generation threats in modern warfare.

Why Does India Need Tejas Mk1A X-Guard Towed Decoy Integration

Modern air combat is changing fast. Earlier, fighter jets depended on electronic jammers to confuse enemy missiles. But now, home-on-jam missiles can lock onto those same jamming signals and attack the aircraft directly. This makes older defence methods risky and less reliable.

To solve this, the IAF is moving toward active decoy-based protection, which shifts the threat away from the aircraft itself.

What is the X-Guard Towed Decoy System?

The X-Guard is an advanced fibre-optic towed decoy system developed by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defence Systems.

  • It is deployed from a pod and trails behind the aircraft
  • It creates a fake radar signature stronger than the jet itself
  • Enemy missiles get attracted to the decoy instead of the aircraft

This system is designed to confuse and mislead radar-guided missiles, improving survival chances in combat

Some key features:

  • AI-enabled deception capability
  • Real-time signal spoofing instead of simple jamming
  • Retractable and reusable design
  • Works against advanced radar-guided threats

How It Counters Home-on-Jam Missiles

Home-on-jam missiles detect electronic interference from aircraft jammers and use it as a guide.

The X-Guard changes the game:

  • It moves the signal source away from the aircraft
  • The missile locks onto the decoy instead
  • The real jet stays safe outside the blast zone

In simple terms, the decoy acts like a “bait target”, pulling danger away from the fighter

Tejas Mk1A: A Growing Indigenous Power

The Tejas Mk1A is India’s advanced light combat aircraft developed by HAL.

  • 4.5-generation multirole fighter
  • Equipped with AESA radar and modern electronic warfare systems
  • Designed for air-to-air and air-to-ground missions
  • Part of India’s “Make in India” defence push

The aircraft already has:

  • Internal jammers
  • Advanced radar systems
  • Network-centric warfare capabilities

Adding X-Guard will create a multi-layered defence system.

Strategic Impact of Tejas Mk1A X-Guard Towed Decoy Integration

This integration is not just a technical upgrade. It has bigger strategic importance:

1. Better Survivability

Pilots get higher chances of survival in contested airspace.

2. Counter to Modern Missile Threats

Helps defend against next-gen radar-guided and HOJ missiles.

3. Stronger Indigenous Platform

Boosts Tejas Mk1A’s capability to match global fighters.

4. Future Warfare Readiness

Supports India’s shift toward electronic warfare dominance.

How It Fits Into Modern Air Combat Doctrine

Today’s air combat is no longer just about speed and weapons.

It is about:

  • Electronic warfare
  • Signal dominance
  • Smart deception systems

The X-Guard represents a shift from passive defence (jamming) to active deception (decoys). This is the same approach used by advanced air forces globally.
