Operation Sindoor vs Kargil War: How Indian Air Power Evolved Over 26 Years

New Delhi: Indian Air Power has undergone a major transformation over the last 26 years. From the challenges faced during Operation Safed Sagar in the 1999 Kargil War to the precision strikes of Operation Sindoor in 2025, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has significantly improved its technology, training, and combat capabilities.

According to official accounts and defence experts, this evolution reflects India’s growing ability to conduct precise and effective air operations while maintaining strategic restraint.

What Was Operation Safed Sagar

Operation Safed Sagar was the Indian Air Force’s air campaign during the Kargil War of 1999. The operation was launched to support Indian Army troops after Pakistani forces occupied strategic heights along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

The IAF carried out air strikes in difficult mountain terrain at very high altitudes, making it one of the most challenging air operations in India’s military history.

Challenges Faced During the Kargil War

The IAF operated under severe restrictions during Operation Safed Sagar. Aircrew had to identify and attack targets located above 15,000 feet in snow-covered mountains. At that time, precision-guided weapons were limited, and intelligence about enemy positions was often incomplete.

The absence of suitable ballistic tables for such high-altitude warfare further complicated operations.

Political restrictions also prevented Indian aircraft from crossing the Line of Control, reducing available attack options.

How the IAF Achieved Success

Despite these difficulties, the Indian Air Force successfully adapted to battlefield conditions. Precision strikes and coordinated air support played a key role in disrupting Pakistani supply lines and military positions. The destruction of important logistics hubs helped Indian forces regain the advantage during the conflict. Military experts consider the operation a turning point in India’s understanding of modern air warfare.

Operation Sindoor: A New Era of Indian Air Power

The situation during Operation Sindoor in May 2025 was very different. The operation was launched after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. Indian forces targeted terrorist infrastructure linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. According to official statements, the strikes were carefully planned to avoid civilian casualties and unnecessary damage.

Indian Air Power: Pakistan’s Response and India’s Counteraction

Following the strikes, Pakistan reportedly launched drone, missile and air attacks. The Indian Air Force responded with coordinated counter-strikes against military targets. Air bases, command centres, radar facilities and other strategic assets were targeted during the operation. The campaign demonstrated India’s ability to conduct rapid and precise military action across multiple domains.

Key Factors Behind the Transformation of Indian Air Power

Advanced Military Equipment

One of the biggest changes since 1999 is the modernization of India’s defence arsenal. The IAF now operates advanced fighter aircraft, including Rafale jets equipped with SCALP cruise missiles and Hammer precision-guided weapons.

India has also strengthened its air defence network with systems such as Akash, MRSAM and the S-400. The integration of the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) has improved coordination across services.

Better Training and Readiness

Modern pilot training has become far more advanced. High-fidelity simulators, international military exercises and realistic combat scenarios have improved operational readiness. Pilots can now conduct missions effectively during day, night and adverse weather conditions.

Joint Operations Between Armed Forces

The Kargil conflict highlighted the need for better coordination between the Army, Navy and Air Force. Over the years, India has improved joint planning and execution of military operations. Operation Sindoor demonstrated seamless cooperation between different branches of the armed forces.

Improved Defence Strategy

India’s military strategy now focuses on precision, speed and proportional response. Modern surveillance systems, network-centric warfare capabilities and advanced intelligence gathering have strengthened decision-making.

These developments allow commanders to respond more effectively to emerging threats.
