New Delhi: Indian army Ranjeet Project is emerging as a major defence modernization step aimed at transforming the Indian Army’s tank fleet. This Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) programme is designed to replace ageing Soviet-era tanks with advanced, indigenous systems.

Led by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the project reflects India’s push for self-reliance in defence. With cutting-edge technology, better firepower, and improved mobility, the Ranjeet Project is expected to redefine modern battlefield strategy and strengthen India’s position in global defence capabilities.

What is Indian Army Ranjeet Project?

India’s Ranjeet Project, also known as the Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV), is a next-generation main battle tank programme.

It aims to replace the Indian Army’s ageing T-72 tanks, which have been in service for decades. The project is one of the largest armoured modernisation efforts in India’s history. Around 1,700+ advanced tanks are expected to be inducted in multiple phases.

Why India Needs the Ranjeet Tank

The Indian Army currently relies heavily on T-72 tanks, many of which are outdated for modern warfare.

Key reasons behind the project:

  • Rising security challenges along borders
  • Need for modern, high-tech warfare systems
  • Replacement of ageing armoured fleet
  • Focus on indigenous defence production

The Ranjeet Project is aligned with the “Make in India” initiative, aiming to reduce dependency on foreign imports.

Key Features of Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV)

1. Advanced Firepower

The new tank is expected to have a powerful main gun with high precision targeting systems.
It will also support guided munitions for long-range strikes.

2. Next-Generation Protection

The tank will include:

  • Active protection systems (APS)
  • Anti-missile defence
  • Anti-drone capabilities

These features will help it survive in modern combat environments.

3. High Mobility

The Ranjeet tank is expected to be lighter than older tanks, improving:

  • Speed
  • Maneuverability
  • Performance across deserts and high-altitude areas

4. AI and Network-Centric Warfare

The tank will use:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Real-time battlefield data
  • Integration with drones and satellites

This will allow better coordination during combat.

Ranjeet Project: Development and Timeline

The Ranjeet Project is being developed under the leadership of DRDO with support from Indian private companies.

Important updates:

  • Development already underway
  • Indigenous partnerships with private sector
  • Induction expected around 2030

Ranjeet Project: Scale and Investment

The Ranjeet project is estimated to cost around ₹57,000–₹60,000 crore, making it one of India’s biggest defence programmes. It will also create a strong defence manufacturing ecosystem in India.

What is the Importance of Ranjeet Project

Strengthening Border Security

The new tanks will improve India’s readiness along sensitive borders like China and Pakistan.

Boost to Defence Exports

India aims to become an exporter of advanced military platforms in the future.

Long-Term Military Advantage

The FRCV is expected to serve the Indian Army for the next 30–40 years.
