New Delhi: The Delhi government has sanctioned ₹1,850.66 crore as the second instalment of the Basic Tax Assignment (BTA) for 2026-27 to the three civic bodies in the national capital. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment Board will use the funds for essential municipal services and local infrastructure.
Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood said the release is aimed at ensuring financial support to civic bodies so that routine development and public works can continue without disruption.
MCD Gets Majority of the Latest BTA Release
The MCD has received the largest share of the ₹1,850.66 crore instalment, with ₹1,820.40 crore allocated to it.
The NDMC has received ₹17.95 crore, while the Delhi Cantonment Board has been allocated ₹12.31 crore.
With this release, the annual BTA allocations for the three bodies stand at:
- MCD: ₹3,640.80 crore
- NDMC: ₹35.90 crore
- Delhi Cantonment Board: ₹24.61 crore
The latest instalment accounts for 50% of the total BTA allocation for the financial year.

₹3,701.32 Crore Budgeted Under BTA
The Delhi government has earmarked ₹3,701.32 crore under Basic Tax Assignment for 2026-27.
The first instalment of ₹925.33 crore, representing 25% of the annual allocation, was released earlier in the financial year. The second instalment of ₹1,850.66 crore takes the total released so far to ₹2,775.99 crore.
The remaining 25% works out to ₹925.33 crore and is scheduled for release during January-March 2027.
Some PTI-based reports have mentioned the remaining amount as ₹910 crore. However, the ₹3,701.32 crore annual allocation, together with the first two instalments of ₹925.33 crore and ₹1,850.66 crore, leaves ₹925.33 crore. UNI also reported ₹925.33 crore as the final instalment.
Funds to Support Everyday Civic Services
The BTA funds are intended to support the basic functions handled by Delhi’s civic bodies. These include waste collection and disposal, maintenance and repair of neighbourhood roads, streetlight upkeep and maintenance of local parks.
Other reports on the release also mention the functioning of primary schools and local health dispensaries among the civic services supported through the funding.
For residents, the availability of such funds is linked to the ability of local bodies to continue regular maintenance and service delivery across their respective areas.
What is Basic Tax Assignment?
Basic Tax Assignment is the share of tax revenue that the Delhi government transfers to its civic bodies to support their functions.
The system provides financial resources to municipal institutions for carrying out local responsibilities. Since MCD, NDMC and the Delhi Cantonment Board cover different areas and administrative jurisdictions, their BTA allocations vary substantially.
The current distribution shows the scale of MCD’s share, which accounts for the overwhelming majority of the annual BTA allocation.
Government Stresses Timely Fund Release
The Urban Development Department approved concurrence for the latest release on September 21, 2026.
Ashish Sood said the Delhi government is focused on providing financial support for urban infrastructure and public welfare. He also directed civic bodies to maintain financial discipline and use the funds for public purposes.
Officials have also stressed the need for civic bodies to submit utilisation certificates within the prescribed timelines. The funds are being transferred through electronic banking channels, including RTGS and NEFT, according to reports.
Minister Raises Issue of Earlier Delays
Sood also alleged that fund releases under the previous Delhi government were frequently delayed, which, according to him, affected essential public works and put financial pressure on municipal bodies.
The minister said the present administration was working to ensure timely releases so that civic development and maintenance activities could continue without interruptions.
The allegation is the minister’s political assessment of the previous administration and is not independently established by the funding figures themselves.
Why the Release Matters for Delhi
Civic bodies are responsible for a large part of the everyday infrastructure that residents directly experience, from waste management and streetlights to roads and parks.
The latest BTA release gives MCD, NDMC and the Delhi Cantonment Board additional financial resources during the current financial year. With ₹2,775.99 crore now released against the ₹3,701.32 crore annual BTA provision, the remaining instalment is expected in the final quarter.
The funding will therefore be relevant not only to municipal finances but also to the continuity of routine civic services and maintenance work across Delhi.
