Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has announced a major initiative to conserve and restore water bodies across the capital with the onset of summer.
The move aims to address the growing water crisis and environmental challenges in Delhi through large-scale rejuvenation projects led by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
DDA to Restore 77 Water Bodies in Phased Timeline
During a review meeting of a key presentation by the Delhi Development Authority, the Lieutenant Governor directed officials to strictly adhere to deadlines for restoration work.
Key action plan includes:
- 6 water bodies to be restored within 30 days
- 48 water bodies within 60 days
- Remaining 23 water bodies within 90 days
Officials have been instructed to ensure timely execution and strict monitoring of all projects.

LG Emphasizes Urgent Need for Water Conservation
The Lieutenant Governor said that Delhi’s natural water resources are rapidly degrading and require urgent restoration.
He highlighted that strengthening water conservation efforts is critical for tackling the city’s water shortage and environmental stress.
He also confirmed that a structured action plan has been prepared to revive these water bodies in a time-bound manner.
Development Plans for Dwarka, Rohini and Narela
The review meeting also covered major infrastructure development plans for Delhi’s sub-cities, including:
- Dwarka
- Rohini
- Narela
Officials were directed to accelerate development works and improve civic infrastructure and public services in these regions.
Delhi Government’s Heatwave Action Plan
Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a comprehensive heatwave action plan to protect citizens from extreme summer conditions.
Key measures include:
- Mandatory rest breaks for workers during peak heat hours
- Provision of drinking water and shade at workplaces
- Strict guidelines for employers to ensure worker safety
- ORS distribution for school children before leaving for home
- Adequate water, fans, and cooling arrangements in schools
The government emphasized that student and worker safety remains the highest priority during the summer season.
Schools and Worker Safety Under Special Focus
The administration has issued clear instructions to schools and employers to ensure basic facilities such as drinking water, cooling arrangements, and heat protection measures.
The goal is to minimize heat-related health risks and ensure public safety during extreme weather conditions.
The Delhi government’s combined focus on water body restoration, infrastructure development, and heatwave preparedness highlights a broader effort to improve environmental sustainability and public safety across the capital.
