Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed universities in the capital to transform themselves from degree-granting institutions into centres of research, innovation, and social transformation.
Chairing a meeting with Vice Chancellors and Directors of universities under the Delhi government, the LG stressed that higher education institutions must play a direct role in solving real-world problems faced by the city.
The discussion focused on strengthening education, research, and technology-driven development for Delhi.
Aligning Higher Education With PM Modi’s Vision of Viksit Bharat
The Lieutenant Governor emphasized that universities must align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
He urged institutions to evolve into innovation-driven ecosystems that contribute to nation-building through research and technological advancement.
According to him, academic institutions should not remain limited to academic certification but should actively contribute to solving Delhi’s pressing urban challenges.

Focus on Research-Driven Solutions for Urban Challenges
The LG highlighted the urgent need for research-based solutions to address key problems affecting Delhi.

- Improvement of public service delivery systems
He said that the research capabilities of universities must directly benefit citizens and contribute to policy-making and urban planning.
Greater Social Participation for Students Encouraged
Taranjit Singh Sandhu also called for increased student participation in social development activities.
He emphasized strengthening programs such as:
- National Service Scheme (NSS)
- National Cadet Corps (NCC)
- Village adoption initiatives
According to him, such initiatives will help students become responsible citizens, innovators, and job creators.
Push for AI and Future-Ready Education
The LG underlined the importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies in shaping the future of education.
He stated that Delhi’s universities must upgrade themselves into technology-driven and future-ready institutions capable of adapting to rapid global changes.
Institutions were also instructed to prepare time-bound and result-oriented action plans to ensure that research outcomes reach the public effectively.
