DFCCIL Pushes Rail Link to JNPT to Enhance Freight Movement and Cut Logistics Costs

DFCCIL Reviews Progress of Vaitarna–JNPT Section to Boost Rail-Based Logistics
Indian Masterminds Stories

Mumbai: With the objective of developing world-class logistics infrastructure and strengthening rail-based freight movement, a two-day high-level coordination meeting between the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPT), and Western Railway concluded on Thursday.

The discussions focused on accelerating the completion and operationalisation of the Vaitarna–JNPT section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), a critical link that will connect India’s largest container port directly to the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network.

Strategic Push to Connect JNPT with DFC Network

Once the Vaitarna–JNPT section becomes operational, JNPT will be seamlessly connected to the national DFC network, enabling direct rail connectivity between the port and multiple states across the country.

Officials noted that this connectivity is expected to:

  • Significantly enhance rail-based cargo handling capacity
  • Accelerate freight movement
  • Reduce overall logistics costs
  • Improve the efficiency and reliability of container transportation

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of creating globally competitive logistics infrastructure.

High-Level Meeting and Port Visit on January 14

On Wednesday, January 14, DFCCIL’s Director (Operations & Business Development), Mr. Shobhit Bhatnagar, and JNPT’s Deputy Chairman, Mr. Ravish Kumar Singh (IRTS) held detailed discussions and undertook a site visit at JNPT Port.

During the visit, deliberations were held on:

  • Current progress of the Vaitarna–JNPT section
  • Strategic importance of rail connectivity to the port
  • Long-term impact of the project on EXIM trade and port operations

JNPT officials emphasized that the direct DFC connectivity would give fresh momentum to import–export trade, substantially increase cargo handling capacity, and strengthen the global competitiveness of Indian ports.

Coordination with Western Railway on January 15

On Thursday, January 15, Mr. Shobhit Bhatnagar held a crucial coordination meeting with senior officials of Western Railway, including:

  • Mr. V.A. Malegaonkar, Principal Chief Operations Manager (PCOM)
  • Mr. Narendra Panwar, Chief Freight Transportation Manager (CFTM)
  • Mr. Pankaj Singh, Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai Central Division

Key operational and safety aspects were discussed, including:

  • Progress of ongoing works
  • Crew arrangements
  • Train management and operational planning
  • Safety and security measures

The coordination aimed at ensuring smooth integration of the new section with existing railway operations once commissioned.

Boost to Sustainable and Cost-Effective Logistics

Connecting JNPT to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is expected to mark a major milestone in India’s rail-based logistics sector. The project is likely to promote a significant modal shift of freight from road to rail, leading to:

  • Fuel savings
  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Reduced road congestion
  • Safer and more cost-effective transportation

Industries dependent on bulk cargo and container movement are expected to benefit directly from improved reliability and reduced transit times.

Senior Officials Present

Several senior officials participated in the meetings and site visits, including:

  • Mr Ashwin Arvind Singh, Deputy Executive Director and Terminal Head
  • Mr Venkateshwar Chaturvedi, Manager
  • Mr Jaideep Kadam
  • Mr Ashwini S. Sudarshan

Their presence underscored the importance of inter-agency coordination for timely completion of this critical infrastructure project.

Way Forward

Officials stated that continued coordination among DFCCIL, JNPT, and Western Railway will be key to ensuring timely completion of the remaining works. Once operational, the Vaitarna–JNPT link is expected to play a transformative role in India’s logistics and freight ecosystem, supporting economic growth and trade expansion.
