WCL Appoints Dr. Hemant Sharad Pande as CMD to Lead Transformation in Coal Operations 

Veteran coal sector professional with 37 years of experience in WCL and SECL takes charge, expected to accelerate digital reforms, employee welfare and operational efficiency

New Delhi: Dr. Hemant Sharad Pande has officially assumed charge as Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Western Coalfields Limited on May 8, 2026. Senior officials of the company, including directors, the Chief Vigilance Officer, and departmental heads, extended their congratulations on his appointment.

37 Years of Rich Experience in Coal Sector

Dr. Pande brings nearly four decades of experience in India’s coal industry, having worked extensively in both WCL and South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL).

Before becoming CMD, he served as Director (Human Resources) at WCL, where he led several administrative and digital transformation initiatives.

Focus on Digital and Administrative Reforms

During his tenure in HR leadership, Dr. Pande introduced key reforms such as:

  • SWASTH healthcare management portal
  • Dispensary Management System (DMS)
  • Modernization of HR digital platforms
  • Strengthening employee welfare and pension systems
  • Improved transparency in administration

He also focused on industrial relations, social security, and medical support for retired employees.

Strong Academic and Global Exposure

Dr. Pande is a highly qualified professional with:

  • B.Tech in Mining Engineering from VNIT Nagpur
  • M.Tech in Mining
  • MBA
  • PhD in Management

He also completed advanced training at ESCP Europe and participated in international study visits to France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He was also part of India’s delegation at PDAC Canada.

Key Contributions in Coal India Group

Dr. Pande began his career in 1989 as a Mining Engineer with Coal India Limited.

He has led major mining projects and implemented modern systems such as:

  • SILO-based eco-friendly coal dispatch systems
  • In-pit crushing systems
  • IT-enabled operational transparency models
  • Solar power unit development in Johilla Area
  • CSR and community development projects

He also served as General Manager at Gevra and Raigarh areas, managing large-scale mining operations.

Awards and Recognition

In 2022, Dr. Pande was honoured with the “Best General Manager Award” by Coal India Limited for his outstanding leadership and operational excellence.
