Delhi: In a major boost to urban mobility, the railway authorities have approved the widening of the Mukarba Chowk Road Over Bridge (ROB) and an elevated loop connecting Shalimar Bagh to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar in North West Delhi.
The decision is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion at one of Delhi’s busiest junctions.

Mukarba Chowk to Become Traffic-Free Corridor
Mukarba Chowk, considered one of the most critical traffic bottlenecks in Delhi, is set for a major transformation.
The widening of the ROB aims to eliminate long traffic jams caused by the narrow bridge structure on the Outer Ring Road near Haiderpur and Badli.
Once completed, vehicle movement is expected to become smoother and more efficient.
Elevated Loop to Improve Freight Connectivity
A new elevated loop from Shalimar Bagh to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar will provide seamless connectivity for heavy vehicles and commuters.
Key benefits include:
- Reduced waiting time at railway crossings
- Faster movement of freight vehicles
- Improved logistics efficiency at transport hubs
- Better connectivity for surrounding residential areas
Lower Travel Time and Reduced Transport Costs
The project is expected to bring significant economic benefits by:
- Reducing fuel consumption
- Cutting travel delays for trucks and commuters
- Improving supply chain efficiency in key industrial hubs
Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, a major freight hub, will particularly benefit from improved vehicle movement.
Improved Safety and Regional Development
The railway’s approval after technical evaluation and NOC clearance ensures smoother execution of the project.
The upgraded infrastructure will enhance safety and connectivity for densely populated areas such as:
- Pitampura
- Shalimar Bagh
- Badli
- Rohini
These improvements are expected to accelerate regional development and ease daily commuting challenges.
Delhi’s Push Towards Modern Transport Infrastructure
The initiative reflects Delhi’s broader push toward modern, efficient, and future-ready transport systems, aiming to reduce congestion and improve urban mobility.
The Mukarba Chowk ROB widening and Shalimar Bagh–Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar elevated loop project mark a major step in transforming traffic management in Delhi. Once completed, the infrastructure upgrade is expected to significantly ease congestion and improve connectivity across North-West Delhi.
