New Delhi: Semiconductor Mission 2.0 has received approval from the Government of India to strengthen the country’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and reduce dependence on imported chips. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) says the new mission will help India build a complete semiconductor value chain, create jobs, attract investments, and improve technological self-reliance.

What Is India Semiconductor Mission 2.0

The Government has approved India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0 with a total outlay of ₹1.27 lakh crore. The programme builds on the progress made under Semicon 1.0 and aims to make India a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, research, and innovation.

According to MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan, the mission is designed to create a complete and self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem rather than focusing only on chip manufacturing. He shared these details while speaking at the CII Conference on Advancing Atmanirbhar Bharat in Semiconductor Design and Manufacturing in New Delhi.

Key Highlights Of India Semiconductor Mission 2.0

The new mission will support:

  • Semiconductor fabrication (Fab) units.
  • Advanced Packaging, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facilities.
  • Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facilities.
  • Semiconductor equipment manufacturing.
  • Specialty gases and chemicals production.
  • Research, innovation and chip design.
  • Development of a stronger domestic semiconductor supply chain.

India’s Semiconductor Industry Is Growing

S. Krishnan said 2026 is a milestone year for India’s semiconductor sector. He noted that three semiconductor manufacturing units have already started commercial production, showing that India is making steady progress in building its domestic chip industry.

Why Semiconductor Mission 2.0 Is Important

Semiconductors are used in almost every modern electronic product, including smartphones, computers, electric vehicles, medical devices, telecom equipment, defence systems and artificial intelligence technologies. A strong domestic semiconductor industry can reduce import dependence, improve supply chain security, create high-skilled jobs and increase India’s competitiveness in the global technology market.

Government Focuses On Long-Term Growth

The MeitY Secretary said building a globally competitive semiconductor ecosystem will require long-term commitment and continuous policy support. He added that the Government remains committed to supporting the sector and believes the new initiatives will strengthen India’s position in the global semiconductor value chain.
