New Delhi: The Government of India has taken action against unauthorised Battery Management System (BMS) mobile applications that were allegedly being misused to gain remote control access to e-rickshaw batteries.

According to the information shared by the government, orders were issued on 3 July 2026 to remove such unauthorised applications from app stores to protect consumers and prevent possible misuse of connected vehicle technologies.

The move comes after reports highlighted concerns that certain BMS applications could allow unauthorised remote operations of e-rickshaw battery systems, creating risks for vehicle owners and users.

Government Takes Steps to Protect Consumers from Digital Misuse

With the increasing use of smart technologies in electric vehicles, battery management systems have become an important part of e-rickshaw operations.

However, unauthorised access to these systems can create security threats, including:

  • Remote control misuse of battery systems
  • Potential disruption of vehicle operations
  • Risks to consumer safety and privacy

The government’s action aims to ensure that only authorised and secure applications are used by electric vehicle users.

Integrated National Cybersecurity Framework Strengthens Digital Safety

The government has also established a nationwide coordinated cybersecurity framework to improve digital resilience and protect citizens, organisations and critical infrastructure from cyber threats.

The framework brings together multiple agencies working towards cybersecurity monitoring, incident response and protection of important digital systems.

Role of National Cyber Security Coordinator in Cyber Defence

The National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC) functions under the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS).

Its key responsibility is to coordinate cybersecurity-related efforts among different government agencies and ensure better cooperation in handling cyber threats.

CERT-In Leads National Cybersecurity Incident Response

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has been designated as the national agency responsible for responding to cybersecurity incidents under Section 70B of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

CERT-In works on:

  • Monitoring cyber incidents
  • Issuing security advisories
  • Coordinating responses to cyber threats
  • Supporting organisations during cybersecurity emergencies

National Cyber Coordination Centre Monitors Cyber Threats

The government has implemented the National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC) through CERT-In.

The centre examines cyberspace activities to identify possible cybersecurity threats.

After identifying risks, the NCCC shares relevant information with:

  • Government organisations
  • State governments
  • Stakeholder agencies

This enables timely action against emerging cyber threats.

NCIIPC Protects India’s Critical Digital Infrastructure

The government has established the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) to safeguard critical information infrastructure.

The centre operates under Section 70A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Its role includes protecting essential digital systems that are important for national security, economy and public services.

Consumer Protection Laws Address Digital and E-Commerce Challenges

The government highlighted the importance of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 in dealing with challenges arising from modern technologies, e-commerce platforms and digital markets.

The law aims to strengthen consumer rights and provide a modern framework for addressing issues related to:

  • Online services
  • Digital transactions
  • Technology-based consumer concerns
  • E-commerce-related disputes

Cybersecurity Awareness Programmes Promoted Across India

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is implementing the Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) project to improve cybersecurity skills and create awareness among citizens.

The initiative focuses on:

  • Developing skilled cybersecurity professionals
  • Promoting safe digital practices
  • Creating awareness about cyber hygiene

Awareness resources are shared through platforms including:

  • Stay Safe Online
  • Infosec Awareness
  • Cyber Swachhta Kendra

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Cyber Safety and Digital Trust

The information regarding the removal of unauthorised e-rickshaw battery management apps and the national cybersecurity framework was provided by Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada in the Lok Sabha on 22 July 2026.

The government said these measures are part of its broader effort to strengthen cybersecurity, protect consumers and build a secure digital ecosystem across India.
