Ranchi: A large Janmashtami celebration was organised at Morabadi Maidan in Ranchi on the occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami, drawing a large gathering of residents and devotees.
Organised by the Janmashtami Organising Committee, the Shri Krishna Janmotsav 2026 featured devotional programmes, cultural performances and the traditional Dahi Handi competition.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren attended the event and formally launched the Dahi Handi competition by breaking the handi. Several political leaders and public representatives were also present.
Key Highlights of the Celebration
- Dahi Handi: CM Hemant Soren broke the Dahi Handi to mark the beginning of the competition.
- Bal Gopal Competition: Children dressed as Lord Krishna participated in a Bal Gopal competition.
- Cultural programmes: Artists presented performances based on Lord Krishna’s life and his various leelas.
- Bhajan performances: Devotional songs were performed during the celebrations.
- Prize distribution: Soren presented awards to winners of the Bal Gopal competition.
- Public participation: A large number of residents and devotees gathered at Morabadi Maidan.

Human Pyramids Mark Dahi Handi Competition
Following the Chief Minister’s launch, teams participating in the Dahi Handi competition formed human pyramids to reach and break the handi.
The competition attracted spectators who gathered around the ground and cheered for the participating teams.
CM Extends Janmashtami Greetings
Soren extended his greetings and best wishes to the people of Jharkhand on Janmashtami.
He said the annual Shri Krishna Janmotsav celebration was becoming bigger and better each year. He also said that steps would be taken to make next year’s event larger and more attractive.
The Chief Minister wished all participating teams success and said such celebrations contribute to strengthening love, brotherhood and social harmony.
Leaders Attend Janmashtami Programme
Among those present at the celebration were Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh, former state Congress president Rajesh Thakur, Rajiv Ranjan and Rural Development Minister Deepika Pandey Singh, along with other Congress leaders and public representatives.
The celebrations continued until late Friday evening with devotional songs and cultural performances, keeping the Morabadi Maidan immersed in the festive atmosphere of Janmashtami.
