Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced a one-month remission in the sentences of eligible prisoners on the occasion of Janmashtami during a celebration held at Bhopal Central Jail.
The Chief Minister also announced plans to expand the open-jail system in the state and make provisions for an open jail facility for women prisoners. A mental health centre is also set to be opened at the Central Jail in Bhopal.
Key Announcements for Prisoners
- One-month sentence remission: Eligible prisoners will receive a one-month reduction in their sentences.
- Open jail for women: The state will make arrangements to extend the open-jail facility to women prisoners.
- Mental health centre: A mental health centre will soon be established at Bhopal Central Jail.
- Expansion of open jails: The state plans to increase the number of open jails.
- Prisoner welfare: The government has made arrangements for facilities including training in various crafts, Ayushman cards, and yoga and meditation activities.

CM Highlights Prison Reforms
Addressing prisoners at the Janmashtami event, Yadav spoke about measures undertaken by the Jail Department, including promotions to various posts, creation of new positions, construction of additional barracks and provision of essential facilities in jails across the state.
He also referred to the implementation of the new jail law and initiatives aimed at providing prisoners with vocational training and access to healthcare facilities.
Yadav said the creation of new posts and promotions would help the Jail Department function more smoothly.
Open Jail Facility for Women
The Chief Minister said the number of open jails in Madhya Pradesh would be increased. While open-jail provisions currently exist for male prisoners, the state has decided to make similar arrangements for women prisoners.
He said efforts would be made to establish the facility for women at the earliest.
Mental Health Centre at Bhopal Central Jail
Jail Director General Varun Kapoor said a mental health centre for prisoners would soon become operational at Bhopal Central Jail.
According to Kapoor, prisons in the state have also undertaken activities such as yoga and the construction of Parthiv Shivlings, along with other creative programmes. Construction of new staff quarters is also underway.
Six Jail Personnel Honoured
During the event, the Chief Minister honoured and rewarded six Jail Department officers and employees for various acts of courage.
The programme also featured a short play depicting episodes from the life of Lord Krishna, performed by prisoners. Yadav praised the presentation.
The Janmashtami celebration was attended by Madhya Pradesh Sports and Youth Welfare and Cooperation Minister Vishwas Sarang and Principal Secretary, Jails, Mukesh Chandra Gupta, among others.
